i have a mild steel maniflow manifold and was just wondering about rustproofing it?

can you get decent high temp paints?? or is it a bad idea to paint them?

If your broke then use emulsion paint.
If not then high temp exhaust paint is good
best is motorbike 'Pot Black'

This one was sanded off then treated with a rust treatment (cu-rust I think) then sanded again and painted with motorcycle Pot Black.
It leaves a nice matt silk finish, doesn't burn off and will last a long time. You can also touch it up as nessesary and you cant see the join ...

Oh, and a small tin goes a long way >_<

Since exhaust manifolds are continuously full of superheated steam and various acidic vapours while the engine is running , they rust from the inside out. Painting the outside won't have much effect on how long it lasts really.

It will keep it looking nice at the very least though. And less rust has got to be better?

Stainless is the way then... oh well, start saving now. >_<

Well exhaust manifolds are a bit hot for most types of stainless really. There have been some photos of really badly melted ones on here before. A mild one should last you at least 10 years, painted or not.

If the exhaust gas is hot enough to damage the pipe then your ignition is badly retarded.

Hot enough to have the pipe glowing is what you need to damage the metal and is too hot , remember the exhaust valves will be even hotter !

I would, it wont get rusty on the outside then and will look a lot better than a rusty one.
It wont melt or catch fire, take no notice of the scaremongers >_<

Funny how the high temp paint is 500c and exhaust gas temps are 600c

What does that tell you how long the coating will last ;)

yeah everyone seemed to go off on a tangent.

but if the manifold will last for years unpainted then it'd be a waste of monies. yes itll look good but the moeny would look better in my pocket lol.
