Incorrect...

The 'lowest performing' 1275's are the last of the A+ 1275's in basic trim, ie sprites etc....

I hope i'm not going too far offtopic with this, but what is the difference between say a A+ 1275cc Mayfair and a A+ 1275cc Cooper of the same year? To start with the camshaft i suppose, anything else?

Yes there is - Download WinSU, (find it on Google), and enter your spec, it'll give you rough power and torque curves, if you buy the software for £9.99 (I think), then you also get needle recommendations working...

Glad to help,

Dave

remember they will loose alot of power over the years. Expect 45-50bhp max from a sprite now adays. Like the engine sat in the corner of my garage

Well maintained engines don't loose power with age, it's a myth.
Worn out engines loose power. >_<

AFAIK, the difference between the two, say a 1994 Mayfair and Cooper SPi is in the camshaft and the compression ratio. The UK market Cooper has the high CR of 10:1 while the export market has the same engine as the Mayfair (low compression 9.4:1), hence the lower bhp...

it will looser power, you cannot help certain wear, especially effecting valve lift etc. Carbon deposits etc. Also, if you were to buy a new sprite in 1992 and put it on a rolling road im pretty sure it wouldnt meet the actual power they specified it as.

An engine that is well run in and loose will perform better than anew one and continue to perform as long as it is maintained propperly.
There are adjustments thet can be made to allow for wear e.g. tappet clearences, points, carb ajustments, timing adjustments etc.
Plus renewables like plugs, timing chains, clutches, pistons and rings etc ...
So the car should always perform at least as good as new, if not better >_<

Ahh ok, thanks for the awnser! So how do increase the compression ratio, do the coopers have different pistons or is it gasket related?

(I have a cooper with a mayfair engine >_< )

well when the cams wear there is no way that you can get the same lift without a modified rocker ratio... which isnt a standard engine any more. And cams do wear, fact. And if you on about changing pistons... your doing a complete engine rebuild, lmao, ofcourse ill be the same after that, its a complete engine rebuild, but ur spending alot of money.
