hey guys, can anyone explain how you go about fitting pot joints back into the gearbox once removed,,, once youve split them out with a hammer and peice of wood or similar,, ( unless u have the fancy tool!!!) there is that little metal ring which fits in a groove but this seems to prevent u putting them back in??

my question is how do you put the pot joint back in with this ring in place on my last mini i left it off because i just cudnt fit them back into the gearbox, i think they lock the pot joint in place???
cheers.

They do lock the joint into place and really should be there, in extreme circumstances the drive shaft can come out although this is more likely if you leave the clip off the cv joint end.

Anyway, assuming that the clip is not damaged then just tap them in with a soft hammer. Works in exactly the same way as the cv joint...

If the pots are attached to the driveshaft, then the best option is to re-assemble the drive shaft into the hub, and just push them back in...

A little grease on the end of the output shaft may help to retain the circlip in a centralised position, the problems are usuall encountered when the clip drops and the chamfer on the pot cannot bring it central and pinches the clip...

If the clips are damaged then it's best to replace them with new ones.

And no you should not drive without them as, as above, you could loose a driveshaft while cornering which not only would loose you drive but also the oil out of your gearbox...

Assuming that it is not damaged, you could always try taking the clip off and closing it up a little with a pair of pliers, put it back on the end of the shaft and give it another go. If memory serves, new clips do tend to stand a little proud and will need a bit more effort, but the joint should go on fairly easily.

Centering it with a bit of grease is a good idea....

i had this exact problem last week, i found it will go back if you place the circlip gap in the grove of the shaft recess and gently persuade the pot back on. give it a try mate.

Grease idea is a good one , just keep twisting and trying until it pops on

I can never get the pot joint through the hole in the subframe if its all assembled like that - physically wont fit..

i take the boot off of the pot joint - fit the 'pot' with copper faced tapper onto the output shaft - then pop the driveshaft and all back together...
