But on a serious note. I had a head on smash with another car in my Mini. Both my passenger and I walked away unhurt. They're safer than alot of people think. Just don't drive like a loon and everyone will be fine. Tell your girlfriend not to worry

Assure her that unlike other cars the whole car is a crumple zone unlike some which only have a little crumple bit at the front
Hah, thats the joke we make on the run to Uni every day!
This topic has moved fast!
I shall show her the pictures in the crashed mini thread and try and convince her that the driver cell is safer than she thinks.
I'm pretty sure it's not my driving - more like the bumps and being close to the ground. Where we live in Somerset some of the dual carriage ways are rather bumpy. In fact, she's far worse the driver! I remember when we were going down a long road at 60 and there was a huge puddle (more like lake). She decided to drive straight through it in a little Micra instead of driving around it. She got in a right huff when I told her what a stupid thing that was to do as it could have pulled us into the ditch.
I reckon she'll come round to the idea. If not....£100 for a slightly used girlfriend anyone? BNIB

The car will always stay with me

Long story short:
Bought my first Mini last month. Been showing it off to friends and family over the holidays - thought that my girlfriend would really like it. Turns out she hates the idea of me driving it because in her eyes I will instantly die in a crash because it's "so unsafe". The other night she was crying because of this, and that is what bothers me slightly - she said she can't be happy knowing that I'm driving around in it.
Now I know that Minis aren't exactly the safest cars in the world, but isin't this just an irrational fear? Can anyone give me any advice to put her mind at ease?
It upsets me knowing that she is upset
i had EXACTLY the same problem. my girlfriend seemed set on the idea of my first mini and first and only car, being an instant death trap. really got on my nerves but i just tried to ignore it. luckily she seems to have calmed down now and actually quite likes the mini. ahaha, told her.
wish i could offer help but as far as i know all you can do is ride the storm until its over (hopefully the storm not the relationship)
hope your little problem resolves itself, good luck!!

Did she have a negative experience of a mini when she was young

On a more serious note her fear is irrational... no they aren't the safest cars in the world but the chances of you having a serious crash are just as low as they are in any other car. I don't think there's much else you can say apart from that really. If you cant talk her into not having a beef every time she sees the car then she's just going to have to live with it
in a way your less likely to have a crash in a mini. saw in a mini mag a few months back its been scientifically proven that drivers of older 'less refined' cars are better drivers because you can actually feel what the car is doing and react to it. the modern luxuries distance you from driving skill and concentration...
so go mini's!!! safe cars. point proven!

About as safe as u can get, engine no longer comes into your legs, FIA cages will not bugger up, put out fires. Makes it look scary though! hehe.

didnt read the whole thread, but just change girlfriends, no hassle then.
That would be sooo much easier - long distance relationship and all - but you know how love is...
Annoying!

I may think about putting a cage in actually - although what are they like with back seat passengers? Does it intefer with getting in/out or passenger room?
