this is how the mini city appeared in the 1989 brochures however there were a lot of changes going on around this time. its possible that your car would have just the word city and no stripe under the windows and it may of had different seats.

you should have the twin instruments, fixed rear windows and the same hub caps.

if you have a date of first registration i may be able to get more detail :D

I prefer the City logo when its the massive on the whole panel below the rear windows.

And just cast your eyes over those stylish Crayons seat facings

I love old mini brochure's, they're full off hilarious quote's such as the above!

Even more amusing because that isn't Crayons fabric, that was the name of the trim used in the Racing/Flame specials. Someone in BL Marketing has been copy and pasting from the brochure they were writing yesterday I think, must have been Friday afternoon. I am surprised that head restraints only became standard in the City in 1989!

As requested by s robinson91, a quick history of the mini city. i have put this together from the books that i have, and I'm not saying its 100% accurate so if you spot anything that differs from your car, please add your comments

July 1979: The Mini 850 was replaced by the Mini City, still with 850cc engine. The new entry level mini was fitted with black bumpers and black gutter and wheel arch trim. Large three quarter length body stripe decal with “city” on each front wing and on the boot lid. Grille was black. Upholstery was Houndstooth check, with single centre clock. No heated rear window. Fixed rear side windows. Single “drivers side” door mirror.

Posted Image

Early 1980: 7.5 gallon fuel tank fitted as standard

August 1980: production of 850cc mini city ended

September 1980: 1000cc mini city introduced. Trim same as 850cc city.

April 1982: city re-named city E with higher final drive ratio and high compression head. Large side stripes replaced with “city” logo on doors and boot lid.

September 1982: City E now fitted with heated rear window, reversing lamps and black fuel filler cap.

October 1984: front disc brakes and 12inch wheels introduced. Wheel arch extensions now as standard. Upholstery now in Saw tooth fabric (very similar to Houndstooth).

September-November 1985: now fitted with colour coded top dash rail, twin instruments behind steering wheel, face level air vents and four spoke steering wheel. Grille, wheel arches and door handles now in grey. New wheel trims. Side repeaters now fitted on front wings. “City” decal moved from doors to rear quarter panel.

October 1986: rear lap belts now standard on all cars.

June 1987: Austin badges deleted.

August: 1988: City E now officially renamed “City”. Crayons upholstery with front seat headrests and three spoke steering wheel standard. revised city decals

October 1988: brake servo now standard.

November 1991: now with full width wheel trims. Harlequin upholstery with Interior door handles, steering wheel and column now black instead of grey.

May 1992: Mini City re-named Mini Sprite.

The top ones mine!

Originally a:

1979 Mini City with houndstooth interior! (which i changed for the cooper interior, simply because it had head restraints)

I have 2 door mirrors and a heated rear windscreen, however. As far as i am aware these were standard fitment.

Original minus the spotlights (scanned in image):
