I'm sure this mountain biking thing is jinxed for me! I'm desperately trying to get back into it, but one thing after another keeps going wrong with getting my bike sorted!
I used to do loads and a bought a GT I-Drive XCR2000 (1999 model) I know it's old, but it's still awesome, apart from the rear shock bushes needing replacing - anyone know where I can get those from? - it was specced for XC when I bought it, but I started doing more downhill, so it ended up with big heavy wheels, 2.4 inch tyres, 9 gears and some White Brothers upside-down forks, and ultra-short stem and is hopeless for XC. I've been setting all that right and have bought a new back wheel, cranks, front shifter, front derailleur, magura brake for the back, Race Face stem etc and was planning to ride this weekend.
I've just tried to setup the front gears and the bolt in the cable clamp has just snapped itself, first time its been tightened and wasn't even close to being tight. The derailleur was bought on ebay in september, so I can't return it and it's hard to prove that I hadn't clamped it up too tight anyway, so how the bleep do I get the end of the bolt out so I can put a proper one in? It's game over for the weekend because I'm going away and can't take a bike thats broken because it's too much hassle.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaargh
Advice??
Thanks!

If theres enough room, drill it right out and re-tap it if you have that in your tool kit.

also, for shoch bushes try tftunedshox.co.uk or mojo.co.uk. ( either might be .com) they should be able to sort you something out.

it is unlikely that the part of the bolt that is left in the mech is actually tight. can you get to the underside of it?

Thanks, there's no access to the back of the bolt and bit you can see is recessed about 5mm, so I don't think I can notch it. I'm going to take it off the bike now and see what can be done. There's no way I'm buying a new one for the sake of a faulty bolt though!

I popped the mech off this afternoon, there's no way of getting it out without using a stud extractor. I ordered some SPD pedals and new tyres too, so I think I have everytihng to start riding again, once I've got this stud out.

Thanks for that, I've just had a play about and found the bushes I need I think. I've also looked at where the play is, one of the bushes has obvious play in it, but one of the bolt holes in the frame is slightly ovaled too, the play has been there for years, so hardly a surprise!
Now, is it worth replacing the bushes if there's play in the frame too, or is the life of the frame already determined?
Just realised my bike is nearly a decade old, what a legend!

Now I just need a vice so I can open up my forks and put some more oil in them as they're running far too soft.........
Would be good if the car worked too, then I could get to some mountains!

I'm going to go out in the Peak District tomorrow morning, going to jump on a train to Hope/Edale/New Mills/Chinley and either do a loop or two, or bike home from one of the further ones via some hills, not sure yet; anyone got any sharp ideas?
Cheers!
PS - Not sure you want a photo of a decade-old bike with a dinner-plate front brake, but I'll see what I can do maybe.......

Yeah why notRight, worked out a cunning plan for opening the fork legs so I could put the original internals in, funny spanner, lined with an innertube to grip the stanchions and away we went. Forks are now properly sprung and properly damped for XC, so everything is fixed, just need to have a little play with the gears !

Many old bikes seem to outlast some of the newer models!

I've just gone proper old-skool and bought a Trek OCLV 9900 Team Issue, which while it is a 1999 model, will build up into a 20lb hard-tail XC weapon! Can't wait!
I've also managed to get hold of a Marin something or other, which will build up into a pretty handy DH bike, off a mate who's living in NZ at the moment. Cool.
