This is the main downfall with owning a mini!! i cant take my bike anywhere without having to borrow my mums car, lol.

Heres my beaut, pretty far from stock, all XT drive train, mavic rims, super light for a kona! Pretty much just do MTB but a bit of downhill, when i put the standard forks back on.

I'm gonna build myself a kinesis cyclocross bike soon :proud:

I used to have a GT Zaskar back in the day with Marzocchi forks (or Manitou, can't really remember) and if I took both wheels off it would sit across the back seat. Bonus as well is that the rear mech over hangs the rear passenger bins and as such doesn't get damaged if you're careful getting it in. You may need to put a blanket down because otherwise your chainrings sit directly on the seat and generally make a mess.

Try to get down to a decathlon store if there's one near you. They have some pretty decent bikes for not a lot of cash. The other option is to go into your local bike shop and see if they have any second hand bikes for sale. You may be able to get a better spec for the same money.

I spent hours looking at bikes, as I hadn't ridden for years, unlike my mates who still ride. Ok I was looking for a mountain bike, but I needed something that would be ok on and off road, I was advised that makes such as Kona, orange etc are all great makes, but there expensive.

In the end I went to a local bike warehouse near me and test rode a couple of bikes, I already had a bike in mind which I had seen in the ebay and other internet sites, and although I might have saved £20 by getting it on line from somewhere else, by buying it from a shop it was set up ready for me, and there local if there are any issues.

In the end I went for a Claud butler D24 and bought some semi slicks for road use.

I have to say its a lovely bike for the money £320 with 2 road tyres as well.

Its well worth spending an afternoon testing some bikes out that you like within your budget. So far I got the bike Monday, and have done 10 mile son it on Monday, my ase is killing me lol, but I'm going out tonight so willbe in even more pain later

Buying lastyears models is great as you can save loads of money, and quite often its only minor changes or colours that have changed

At the risk of sounding like a complete wuss, I always use proper padded lycra cycling shorts, they make it miles more comfortable to ride long distances plus you can hide them under normal shorts or trousers.

Are Marin any good? I'm looking to get my dad a hybrid bike for his birthday but I have no idea what I'm looking at. Didn't want to spend much more than £150 to be honest (I know I'm gonna struggle) but the Marin factory is in Hastings and I might be able to get one cheap.

Yeah, they tend to be over priced and most of the bikes they do are quasi-mountain bikes, i.e. those that will die at the first sight of grass or mud.

Marin are pretty good but like anyone else they do bottom end bikes which tend to have questionable component packages. If you're after something to cruise around the roads with a bit of track riding then they should do the job fine though. The only problem with makes like Marin is that, as with anything else, you often pay for the name at the sacrifice of component quality. Check your local bike shop as well, you may well find that some of the lesser known makes offer decent bikes for better money.
