Not going to be a rally car anymore ;) minis are fragile and slow compaired to modern stuff, not to mention iv cut stuff out i wouldnt be allowed to rally without. Id rather get this mini done as my toy and then buy myself something like a fiesta ST

looking good!!! going to be a monster rally car when its done!

for the surface rust.. get a knotted wire wheel attachment for a grinder and go over the rust, will completly get rid. then under coat ASAP. i have had to do mine because of surface rust. will 100% be cheaper in the long run.

Knotted wheel is brill cleaned up my floor pan inside & out in no time, but beware if using one on a 4" grinder with no guard ;D nearly ripped my fingers off as the knotted wheel in question was meant for a bench grinder  .....I will never learn

Yeah iv got a scare on my left hand when i was restoring my old bronze clubby it tore into it.

Some areas im not sure a grinding wheel will get to, so ill just have to see when ever i get round to it!

That's very true!! Maybe then the cage is overkill?? Power to weight ratio?

And I know what you mean, got one on my finger.. Doh!

What about getting it a dusting over with a sandblaster again? I have done this with a previous project and it doesn't cost as mug because hey are not doing as much work. Not removing paint / crap just some surface rust.

Naa, not bothered about power to weight when i throw the next engine in.
Plus the cage add's regidity which is useful as im rid of the rear subframe and using a beam. plus all the lightening bits iv done to it. It would be nice however if it were T45!
Ill be using the car for track days aswell at some point.

I might see about a dusting it again with blast but meh, im sure it wont be too difficult with a bit of scotch, its hardly deep

Did a bit more yesterday... welding tip kept spattering up and stopping, siezing the wire... i got fed up... decided it was time to put out for quotes to finish the welding.
Iv writen a list and got myself typed A4 page list of jobs to do... It sounds bad but i think alot of them a small enough jobs the price isnt just going to be sky-high
The rollcage bits how ever i think might hike the price a bit more. Iv done some fantastic MS paint diagrams to give out when im gathering my quotes  but oddly im able to upload images from my phone to photobucket quicker than from my computor
  • Tub rear wheel arches
  • Boot floor to wheel arch panels to create (as diagram)
  • Joints of rear 1/4 panels to B and C pillar to finish off
  • Hole on seat base to weld up
  • Weld up redundant hole in boot gutter
  • Redundant, standard seat belt mounts on exhaust tunnel to remove and plate
  • Rivet holes on inner sills to weld up
  • Redundant handbrake cable hole to weld up
  • 2x exhaust tunnel holes to weld up
  • Inner wings: Fresh air vents and redundant bolt holes to weld up

Inner wings to be cleaned up and have end pieces created and welded in place (as diagram, lip facing outwards)

  • O/S master cylinder holes to be chopped and plated
  • Turbo bulkhead box to be welded in place including actuator clearance
  • Holes on lower bulkhead to weld up
  • New sills to be fitted and modified to accept sill stands. (ensure the sill stand tubes are fully welded to inner sills)
  • Ensure heel board mounts are correct (Think the O/S needs looking at)
  • Weld redundant holes on scuttle panel
  • Weld on A-panels
  • N/S A-pillar to roof repair
  • N/S and O/S B-pillar to roof repair
  • Gutter repair on O/S rear
  • Clean up floor where required

Roll cage:

  • N/S B hoop foot, fully weld on rear edge
  • Front bulkhead plates to be fully welded
  • Front foot well triangulation- ensure all tubes are fully welded

Modification of roll cage (as diagram and explained below)

  • Small section of vertical tube to be welded on top of shock turret and used as mounting points (still allowing access to shock mounts, as diagram)
  • Rear stay to go between B-hoop and to the turret mounting point
  • Lower rear stay (green in diagrams) to be modified and welded to the rear stay from top of the B-hoop
  • X-bar to be welded between the rear stays
  • Harness bar to be welded between the X at the rear

The new bulkheads going to be a bit more thought out this time.
Last one was too shallow, meant fitting an airfiler to the webber was difficult for a task that was already difficult due to the diameter of the ram pipes.

Im sure iv said previously, but its also going to be aluminium. which ill have swage lines pressed into.
Rather than making brackets to raise the EDIS and coil pack off the deck, (to clear the profiled bottom of the coilpack) ill be sinking these into a tigged in recess.
Im also looking to hide the wiper motor and get rid of the KAD bias box in exchange for an internal pedal box. this to clear the bulkhead up further, nice and neat i hope!

Iv still do lighten my front subby too... but this unfortunatly requires the hole saws and swagers... more things i dont own yet haha! list is just ever growing when i see odd things and inspirations

yeah i know what you mean, i tried to get out of the mini scene and i cant excape it i was trying to sell my shell and parts for a bargin really, no one wanted it so im just gonna finish what i started.

but theres loads of parts which people have used which have gone in my book of ideas,

i look forward to seeing more of this though when you get round to it.

oh did you ever get those kad rear arms sorted in the end?

Yeah, i saw you were trying selling up. always a shame when it comes to that, much better if you lump it, store it and do without the cash it holds onto and return as and when.

As to the arms, no i didnt... it was a ******* situation... pay pal are gash, i still have the parts.
All thats required to fix the arms will be a new pin.. luckily not a big job.
I'll probably do that and have them reconditioned the arms fully when the shell's ready to be put back on wheels in rolling state.

So, my friend took his welder back a short while ago... I didnt really get on very well with it, it was forever clogging welding tips.
Iv just won on eBay a Snap-on welder, 2nd hand of course... but I TOO can be a snap-on snob! huzza...

Hopefully pick it up this weekend and then i just need some gas :mmkay: then maybe i can crack on with the car myself as iv been unable to get a quote from SMMC and still havent seen my neighbour to get a minitec quote
