so if i were to fit a pre-engaged motor would this solve the problem? and would it fit?
i have a feeling that i may have to replaced the ring gear on the flywheel too (please, god, no)..
anyone else had a similar problem? or can help at all?
cheers!

The 2 starters do use different rings but will work with each other albeit with added wear and noise.
Some clever person pointed out on a similar thread that there is a race spec pre engaged motor available for the inertia ring gear - for a price.

If their angled on both side in inter starter.
I think, thats how it looked with my starters and flywheels.

standard verto ring gear = 129 teeth

Its as a result of the starter not stopping befor you try and start it again. You need to stop and wait if it fails to start before trying to start it again.
I ended up replacing the starter, but there are a fair few chunks out of the ring gear.
I also think it has something to do with these light weight flywheels using a narrow ringear

standard pre-Verto ring gears = 107 teeth, will work with the pre-engaged starter, albeit somewhat noisily that will shorten ring gear and starter bendix life.

i havent counted them, but i think you've cracked it... its a pre verto clutch, so that all makes sense. im going to try a pre- engaged one, and hope its all cool. the fly's from MED, but unlike usual, there weren't a lot of help, as steve didnt have any starter motors knocking around, so not alot they could do, plus the engine was bought from them 2 years ago, so they didnt have any record of it (i've only just got it running- did look nice in my hallway though!)
ive noticed the same thing as you sprocket, both that the flywheels are narrower and that the starter needs to stop spinning before it tries to start again.
thanks for your help, i just really really really hope i dont have to replace the ring gear- will see what it looks like and how well the pre eng works like.. EEK!

I'm sure its the other way around. The inertia starter motor will work with either a pre-Verto or Verto flywheel. A pre-engaged starter motor will only work with a Verto flywheel.standard pre-Verto ring gears = 107 teeth, will work with the pre-engaged starter, albeit somewhat noisily that will shorten ring gear and starter bendix life.

lol ok so which is it then?
just seems like i will only find out when my ring gear is completely buggered!

basically: if its a 129 teeth then use a pre-engaged..
if its not then use an inertia...

Sorry, but I have to disagree. I don't normally argue with someone who has much more experience than me, but I have both types of starter in my garage, and my engine in there too, so I've just been out to check.you'll find that both are interchangable - but the wrong mix will bugger it all over time...

The pinion on the pre-Engaged starter motor isn't big enough to engage the teeth on the pre-Verto ring gear. You could bolt it to the engine and it won't do any damage, but thats only because it'll just be spinning and won't be doing anything.
Of course I can't rule out the possibility that someone has FUBAR'd my pre-Engaged starter and the teeth have been worn down...
