Trying to remove the alternator from my MPI, there is a square bolt at the bottom of it used for loosening the tension in the drive belt. It is exremely hard to turn using a spanner and doesn't seem to be taking the tension out of the belt. Any advice?

Are you sure that you are turning the bolt the right way? I was sure I was, only to later realize that I wasn't, doh!

I removed my alternator without releasing the belt tensioner by just undoing the mounting bolts. Then with the alternator and belt removed, was much easier to deal with the tensioner.

Well at first I was turning it the wrong way, clockwise, then I started turning it the correct way, anti-clockwise, and it started to come out. You can see some of the thread now so I must be turning it the right way. It just doesn't seem to turn very smoothly or easily.

Have you loosened the tensioner pulley retaining nut?

No, I thought you did that once you had taken the tension out of the belt using the square tensioner nut?

It's definately easier to loosen the pulley nut, slacken off the adjuster and then remove the alternator, then when refitting alternator on, tension belt and then tighten up pulley nut.

Brilliant, that picture is very helpful. Will try it when I get home, once I've bought a new water pump. Thankyou! :shifty:

They're from a genuine Rover sevice manual. My dad is an ex Rover mechanic and when the garage he worked at changed from Rover to Ford he "liberated" a Mini service manual and a Mini electrical library manual for me :withstupid:. More use than the Haynes manual IMO.

Ah yes, that was the problem I had, not loosening the pulley retaining nut. After I had everything apart, I was able to figure that out, of course this was 3 years ago and I had forgotten about the nut. At first glance sure seems you should just loosen it with the adjuster. I actually bent the bracket, so caused myself a little extra work to get it all correct.
