hiya,
do cars become tax exempt after twenty years? or twenty five? my mini is 1988 so am i right to assume that, if it is twenty years, then next year i don't have to pay tax? (P.S. i did search this topic several times and couldn't find what answer i was looking for. just saying before i get mauled!!)

I believe it changed a while back, and now it's only cars that are pre 1972.

i am afraid it isnt tax exempt it is only before 1973 here is the same question asked on what car
Q: When does a car become a classic and no longer require you to pay car tax? I have just bought a 1985 BMW 635Ci. Will this now be classed as a classic?
Simon Williams
A: Unfortunately, for tax purposes, your car is not deemed a classic. Only cars built before January 1 1973 fall into the 'historic vehicle tax' class and are exempt from VED.
As your car was registered after 1973 but before 2001, the tax is calculated on its engine size. Since 2001, all cars are taxed according to their respective carbon dioxide emissions.

How come so many people ask this? The rolling tax exemption was only in place for about three years and was scrapped in 1998! So many people still seem to think it applies! I really do find it amazing.

Without wanting to reinvent the wheel - the issue is the date of manufacture - not date of first registration. Cars manufactured before 1 Jan 1973 are exempt. Apply to Motor Heritage, if there is any doubt, for a Certificate. My '1973' GT6 was in fact built in November 1972 so is tax exempt despite the fact it was first registered in March '73. Take the relevant documentation and Heritage Certificate to your local DVLA office and they will recatergorise your car to the 'Historic Vehicle' category if appropriate. If you have any tax on the vehicle this will be refunded.
