

carbon fibre doors?

i thinking about carbon fibre doors! No more rust!! does anyone know if they can come in the weave affect? because as its a black car, il have the window frame and the inside left and the main part of it painted

I think Curley stuff isn't really for a road car. What they make is pure bred racing stuff, which basically means that while it looks like a Mini door, it has none of the internal parts you need (like the window runners, points for attaching the locks and hinges, or even an internal skin). Curley's products are as light as possible, the doors are pretty much designed to have a bit of plastic or a net riveted into the window opening and to be fixed on with clips or something. Also it'll be no good in a side impact as it's designed to have a full cage inside it. It won't be strong enough to stand up to daily opening and slamming.
Ask Smudger, he makes a lot of carbon stuff. Doors which are sturdy enough to use on a road car and have all the fittings will be heavy (they need to be really thick in places) and expensive as they are a very complex shape. Not many Mini GRP kit cars come with GRP doors because they are important and complex parts.

Hi, yes I do do doors but wont sell em for road use (yet) however, I am going to be sorting out some Minus doors soon, so will be able to talk better when thats all sorted out. However, door frames can be made strong enought and the door skin just needs to be made in a better, stronger CF cloth.
Will be posting when the doors which are already made, are made to an even stronger design and will be ideal for competion.

I know that fiberglass doors come under the same emphasis that they dont have internal parts i.e runners because there too heavy, but are fiberglass doors road legal?
I would love to have fiberglass doors and use those perspex windows with the little spaces on them like this

using fibregalss doors is no different to use a fibreglass body on a kit car as long
as the door can be opened and lock in place thats all the mot requires
but i would fit a internal door bar
i know http://www.framini.com do light wieght doors for £250
they also do grp door skins so no more rot may do some moulds myself bets

I have been told FRA are no longer making stuff.
I do Door Skins in GRP, Carbon Fibre and if wanted Kevlar. All down to the customer.
The doors that are done are a different style to most, which gets rid of some of the problems associated with GRP doors. These have been used in various rallys over the years on various cars. For road use then I want to do a different design to make sure that the frame is alot more sturdy, just for security reasons, and can then sort out the winding window problems (the winder weighs a ton) which is why the doors you see for sale use a metal frame. It would be easier with the Mk1 slideing glass or perspex.
If your keeping the weight down then its these doors and perspex (or similar material, if its rust then try to source some alloy frames and bond on the GRP/Carbon Fibre door skins that I do.
Dont forget, the bottom of the door skin rusts because of the water trap that is the bottom of the door. Hence the bottom of the frame also goes.
Because I am use to doing special orders for customers I can adapt various things to make them stronger/lighter etc. Special frames for bootlids, bit of kevlar in stress points of doors etc
