is it me or does the spark jump to the piston?
Nope but the flame front does - it really hangs on to all surfaces especially the inlet valve doesn't it?
Shame it's not an A. You can see how a hot plug could cause detonation!

Lets you see exactly how the inlet valve opens, letting the air/fuel mix into the combustion chamber, with the piston going down getting a vacuum which helps draw the mixture into the chamber. The piston then rises again, compressing the mixture, and under compression, and with the spark from the spark plug the mixture ignites, just as the piston starts going down again. The exhaust valve then opens, just as the piston begins to rise, pushing the exhaust gases out into the exhaust system.

wow i always imagined the iginition to be much more violent than that. More of an explosion that a wisp of flame like that....
