On a pre verto clutch and flywheel assembly, the clutch plate slides over the splines of the pimary gear. If you put this on the wrong way round, everything else will go together as normal, but it holds the flywheel about half inch further off the crank nose taper. When you come to tighten up the fywheel bolt, it becomes apparent that you've done something wrong as the bolt tightens but the flywheel wont quite make it home.
Like i say, the reason i know this is because i cocked up the same way three weeks ago putting mine together in haste.
