"I respect BMW for bringing the Mini brand back into popularity but did they really need to make it so big?"
Yeah?

They are totally separate cars, manufacturing parts and accessories for the bini doesn't make classic parts any cheaper - the Mini creates its own market.
Retailers could diversify with any other car to expand their business and cut margins - if Minisport stocked engine tuning parts for Honda VTecs some Mini owners would find it more use than them having shelves full of Bini bits.
The Bini only exists thanks to the classic on the other hand. That's why it's so insulting when BMW try to use their muscle.

I also don't get the Bini is good for the classic argument.

I'm probably wrong, but the fact that a few of the larger Mini Specialists supply parts and accessories for both models must mean that it's helping keep them in business and a healthy competitive one at that.
If there was no BINI, then the Mini Specialists would probably start to dwindle in numbers and the strongest would have all the monopoly and be able to charge what the hell they liked for their stuff.
Okay Somerford and a few others don't have anything to do with BINI's, but they've still got to compete with the ones that do.
BMW couldn't give a toss for us classic Mini owners and we're not going to get much support from Rover or what's left of it now.
I'm still definitely no BINI fan and my blood always boils when I think about what they've done over the years. But I can see some good like with the Mini specialists.
Unless of course I'm wrong and it wouldn't make any difference anyway?

I think you'll find that in order to flex its muscle on the 'rights' to the name Mini, BMW picked on several large traders and said something along the lines of:
'If you've got 'Mini' in your title, sell stuff for both versions, or else!'
Hence MBM, M-Machine, etc... others like Mini Sport, for example, chose to sell BMW MINI gear too.
by the way, I have that information from a very good source
