Right well, i'm replacing my track rod ends and i've just fitted some non genuine standard length ones. I'm having it tracked up when its all done and i'm just setting it up well enough by eye just to get me the half mile to the garage thats tracking it up for me. When the wheel is straight and the wheels level the track rod ends need to be on 5 1/2 left hand side and 6 right hand side.
My question is: is 5 1/2 turns enough to make it safe? is it far enough on the track rod?
I only ask as i see the longer track rod ends on minispares and wonder if i need them?

Think so, there are some basic rules for threads:

I think for steel the depth of thread should be at least equal to the nominal width of the fastener - e.g. a M10 bolt needs to be screwed in by 10mm to realise it's full tensile strength.

the longer rod ends are better from a peace of mind point of view, although 6 turns does sound a tad short

no what hes sayin is measure the width of the inner of the track rod or the width of the threadded end

and aslong as the trackrod is on by that much its ok.......that is if that ^^ is true..!

also is it lowered? if it is or even if the cones are just worn it will be lower and should be fitted with the long track rod....

no it isn't lowered at all. All the hilos are set at standard length for now. I've ended up getting some longer track rod ends now for piece of mind as i'm not exactly desperate to have any kind of accident any time soon. Certainly not after the crash that it's being repaired because of now anyway.
cheers for your help mate(s) >_<
