This page is dedicated to the Mini 25 special edition, what must be considered the first of the 'modern' 12" wheel, disc braked Minis. Five years earlier, Mini 20 had been celebrated with the well specified (at least by 1979 Mini standards!) Mini 1100 Special. By 1984, Minis were selling in far fewer numbers, so the 25 shares quite a lot of components with other Minis. Even so, the sales leaflet talks of "something really special in the way of commemoration" and as far as I'm concerned, that is exactly what the 25 is.
How many of the Mini 25's built for UK consumption actually remain on the road is anyone's guess. The 25 is now at an age where people are restoring them, one thing that is clear is how rare they're becoming - after all, they're 20 years old. Long enough for rust to have consumed quite a few. But not mine yet!!!
SPECIFICATIONS:
5000 Mini 25's were built for sale worldwide, some 3,500 of them in the UK at a list price of £3,865. Based on the Mayfair, they are a MK4 saloon shell, 998A+ engine, 12" wheels & disc brakes. All familiar, standard stuff. Colour is Silver leaf Metallic, paint code BLVC 421 or as it appears on the chassis plate MME. Almost all the 25's built were identical with no choice of alternative paint colours. You could have it in any colour you liked, so long as it's silver...
Stripes are unique to the car, being red over dark grey with 'Mini 25' in red on the rear quarters and boot. Incidentally it's one of the few Minis not to have had any removable boot badge. Exterior fittings are all Nimbus grey - namely bumpers, arches, grille, mirrors, rear number plate lamp unit, even the finisher strip on the roof gutter.
Wheels are standard Rover 12x4.5 inch steel, covered in 1275gt style plastic trims; the centre cap is unique, with the 25 logo in red on a black background. OK people hate the lack of alloys, but remember back in 1984 Austin Rover simply didn't make 12" Mini alloys: the Minilight of the Mini 30 was still 5 years away. Tyres incidentally are the familiar 145/70/12's.
The interior is distinctive, described as "flint velvet knitted fabric trim" on seats and side casings, with red piping. Front seats have a small 25 logo stitched into them and the unique front storage pockets. Very useful for storing spare fuses, bulbs or even your entry money for Mini shows! Carpets are flint grey and are lighter than the grey carpets found in many mid '80s Mayfair’s or Advantage models. Red seatbelts, very 1980's and a leather steering wheel with 25 logo on the centre boss. Dash panels are black with a 3-instrument binnacle. Speedo is calibrated, rather optimistically, up to 120mph (Mayfair’s only go to 90). A radio cassette was fitted below passengers dash rail, but lets be honest, by the standards of todays in car entertainment, it would be considered crude! Rear parcel shelf speakers were of a pod variety angled for and I quote "optimum acoustic quality".
The engine is a high compression A+ 998cc unit, painted in that um, distinctive, yellow colour so beloved of Austin Rover. The Carb is the usual HS4 1 1/2" SU. Gearbox, all 25's had an ultra high 2.95 ratio final drive. Great for cruising at 70mph to and from mini shows.
AUSTIN ROVER MINI 25
1984 Was the 25th anniversary of the Austin Rover Mini and so they released a special edition of the mini named the Mini 25.
The Mini 25 was a top of the range Mini Mayfair. It had a few special features.
· Grey Velour with Red piping in the front and back.
· Pockets situated on the front Doors
· Radio
· Mini 25 logo on the centre of the leather steering wheel with red braiding
· Mini 25 logos on the side and back of the car
· Nimbus grey trim including the wing mirrors, wheel arches, grille, number plate light, roof trim and door handles
· Wheel hubs with mini 25 centres.
· Tinted windows
· 12" wheels with front disc brakes
· Nimbus grey dials
The car was painted in metallic silver to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Mini, which was a new type of paint that had not been commonly used before.
5,000 were made
3,500 were kept in England. And the rest were exported.

A few picks of my fine example.

And all 3 25's together, the lager one being the real one, the middle size d one being a 1/10th Tamiya r/c kit painted and stickered up to look like a 25 and the smallest one is one of two i have (the others boxed) very rare collectors edition 25.

Mine had been fitted with an aftermarket glass suroof possibly a Britax or Tudor one, I cannot remember which , suffice to say it leaked but the glass was removable so it was great on sunny days.
Must see if I can find a picture.
