all done for you. Jammy is not the only one that can do topic title changes. The best way on the future is to report the thread and ask nicely!!LOL

Had a few more thoughts on this last night, and after looking at how bad the rot is on one side of the subby (you can see through the metal to where it should be supporting the spring!) I'm going to just use the suspension components off it, and scrap the main section

Posted Image
Look at the left hand side, you shouldn't be able to see the spring!!

It's essentially just two A-arms, but with the bottom enclosed in with a plate of steel, which supports the spring. The upper portion then rests inside the subframe.

Not too easy to make out, but at the bottom edge of the brake disc, is the lower arms, holding in the spring, at at the upper edge of the disc, are the upper arms

Here's a picture of the lower arms, with the spring supported, and the lower plate unbolted - you can see the shape I'd be left with if I did remove it:

My thoughts are, fit the arms to the chassis rails (using 3.5mm steel plate) and then possibly use twin coilovers on each side, like the rear end uses - if only because they're quite small!

Quick bodged pic of how the support may look - suspension arms highlighted in blue

That looks like it'd make lots of positive camber. See if you can lay your hands on a copy of the Race and and Rally Car Source book by Allan Stainforth if you're going to be designing your own suspension.

Will do, thanks for the heads-up!

That's the great thing about making my own suspension support towers - I get to choose all the angles and all the positioning of parts, so I can make it exactly how I want! :)

ooooh... Sheets of steel that are about 3mm-4mm thick would be handy! Smallest I'll need are about 4"x6" (engine mounts) and the biggest will be about 16"x12" (suspension supports)

hehe, gonna try to mount that "wooden lady" somewhere on the dash of the pug soon as well by the way

Is this beast on carbs or is it injected?

it was originally injection - but I'm going retro (and simpler!) and slapping on some nice big beasty carbs! According to this website:

http://www.csgnetwork.com/cfmcalc.html

... I'm gonna need carbs of around 560CFM capacity for a 5.3L (at 100% VE) which is odd, as an unmodified HIF44 flows 240cfm - which means that 3 HIF44 carbs would apparently be enough.... But I want something a bit more..... downdraught!

So, something cheap, and readily available, the good old weber 32/36!

Posted ImagePosted Image
Posted ImagePosted Image

It's not very glamourous, but I dont care - as I can easily get 3 of these for next to nothing, mount them in a line down the centre of the engine, and have them working off one control rod :P Also, at 255CFM each, 3 will be MORE than enough for the V12!

Another good reason for having three carbs... is because I want three! hehe

But apparently the 32/36 webers have a habbit of giving some nasty "stumble" when you snap the throttle shut as standard without LOTS of faffing with the ignition timing - but they're easy enough to modify to sort that (primaries and secondaries all open at the same time - rather than in sequence)

and Nikki, you're a legend! hehe

Yet another quick doodle - shoddy mockup of one possibility of a manifold

Posted Image

Each carb will feed 4 cylinders (essentially, each one has a 1.7L engine to feed) The whole thing will be made as one piece, from sheet steel and some tubing. Each section will be internally divided, to aid with fuelling accuracy. I may internally sculpt them with epoxy resin to improve airflow, because it would be a damned sight easier than moulding the steel to those sort of shapes!

Will more than likely get the flanges laser-cut by a local company, because at least they'd all be identical!
