The gearbox, engine, propshaft, and front subframe, are ALL disconnected! :proud: (well, besides 2 small brake pipes, but that's only because I ran out of daylight before I could remove them!)

Some good news, some bad news

Good news:
The drivers-side of the front subby is in great condition, all the bolts undone without too much fuss (including the HUGE ones at the front!)

Bad news:
The drivers-side of the front subby is...erm..... not really there!

Here's the drivers-side, and a view at the non-existant inner-wing!

hehe, and this is how I unbolted the subframe (yes, I know it was dangerous, but I did take precautions!)

The last ever time this car will be seen with any running gear.......

aaaaaaaaand, it's up! (after removing the brake lines, earth strap, roll-bar mounts, auto gearbox selector cable, and the fan!)

look at that gawwjus engine!

Then after a long time of faffing around to drag it out from underneath - including a failled attampt of wrapping rope around the car to drag it, it was free!

Decided to remove the gearbox, just to make it that bit easier to manouver

Road speed signs are very handy things I'll have you know!

took me bloody AGES to get it into my storage container - ended up having to split the engine/subframe. But now it's done!

done another photochop, this time with the V12 added.

Found out, that to get the propshaft where I need it, and to get the engine to fit under the bonnet, the sump is going to have to be level with the bottom of the chassis rails, which doesn't bother me too much, as it does mean the COG will be a bit lower.

also decided that I'm going to solid-mount it, as apparently, the V12 is a VERY smooth little engine - this is made easier because of the height it needs to be - all I'd need is two struts coming out of the chassis rails, bolting direct onto the sides where the rubber mounts bolted onto, much like the motorbike "Jagged Edge"

Very tempted to add a Mr Gasket type scoop to it as well - mainly because the intakes are possibly going to be poking out of the bonnet anyway! lol!

lol, my god that V8 looks TINY in that setup he's done! but at least it shows I'm not the only person with this kinda thinking

Really was tempted to try to drive the jag - but I didn't have a spare battery to put in it to turn it over, and the fuel was about 6 years old, so would've needed a complete flush with new fuel. The intakes were full of of powdered aluminium corrosion, which was sat on the valves - so if I did manage to get it to turn over, it would've knackered the bores/rings anyway... so in a way, quite glad I didn't manage to get it to spin over!

Turned it by the flywheel though, so at least I know it's not seized solid!

Been at the other half's today with not much to do (she's at work) so spent the majority of it online, reading up on a few things.

There are two types of Jag V12, the earlier non-HE (High Efficiency) and the later HE. The only real difference being the cylinder head. This much I knew already, and I thought mine was the non-HE type, as it just had the V12 badge on the back.

But.......

It turns out that at around 1988, they ditched the HE badge, and reverted back to the V12 badge, so there was no external way to tell (!!) I found out a way to tell though - if the sparkplugs are vertical, it's non-HE (the head's just got a flat face where the chamber is) if they're slightly inclined towards the centre of the engine, then it's a HE type

Here's a pic of the HE combustion chamber:

Posted ImagePosted Image

Unfortunatly, whilst it may give me an extra 50% improvement in economy, it also limits me to around 400Bhp - this is due to the exhaust valve being so damned shrouded! :P And looking at that cutaway pic, it looks like there's no hope of un-shrouding it, as there's no meat left around it to remove!

Standard CR is 12.5:1 on this engine though, so if I want to supercharge it, I'm gonna have to have either mechanically unsightly head-spacers, or have the pistons machined, which would only gain me a couple of CC's. But apparently, the non-HE was around 9:1, and as the head was just flat, that means the pistons themselves must have had a rather large bowl in them to allow such a low CR. So just swapping to non HE heads would more than likely give me an insane (and unuseable) CR

The standard crank is also good for 650Bhp (and maybe even more) so I'm safe with that one

Also, I found out why there was an ignition coil placed rather randomly, just in front of the radiator, behind the grille..

A clever trick was still needed to meet the abnormal energy requirement of the HE V12 - the coil had a second, non-firing, coil connected in parallel thereby doubling the rate at which energy built up in the system

Which also gives me another hint at its' HE status! :o

Well, at least I've learnt a bit more - next I'm onto taking it apart a bit more! lol
