Been at the other half's today with not much to do (she's at work) so spent the majority of it online, reading up on a few things.
There are two types of Jag V12, the earlier non-HE (High Efficiency) and the later HE. The only real difference being the cylinder head. This much I knew already, and I thought mine was the non-HE type, as it just had the V12 badge on the back.
But.......
It turns out that at around 1988, they ditched the HE badge, and reverted back to the V12 badge, so there was no external way to tell (!!) I found out a way to tell though - if the sparkplugs are vertical, it's non-HE (the head's just got a flat face where the chamber is) if they're slightly inclined towards the centre of the engine, then it's a HE type
Here's a pic of the HE combustion chamber:

Unfortunatly, whilst it may give me an extra 50% improvement in economy, it also limits me to around 400Bhp - this is due to the exhaust valve being so damned shrouded!

And looking at that cutaway pic, it looks like there's no hope of un-shrouding it, as there's no meat left around it to remove!
Standard CR is 12.5:1 on this engine though, so if I want to supercharge it, I'm gonna have to have either mechanically unsightly head-spacers, or have the pistons machined, which would only gain me a couple of CC's. But apparently, the non-HE was around 9:1, and as the head was just flat, that means the pistons themselves must have had a rather large bowl in them to allow such a low CR. So just swapping to non HE heads would more than likely give me an insane (and unuseable) CR
The standard crank is also good for 650Bhp (and maybe even more) so I'm safe with that one
Also, I found out why there was an ignition coil placed rather randomly, just in front of the radiator, behind the grille..
A clever trick was still needed to meet the abnormal energy requirement of the HE V12 - the coil had a second, non-firing, coil connected in parallel thereby doubling the rate at which energy built up in the system
Which also gives me another hint at its' HE status!

Well, at least I've learnt a bit more - next I'm onto taking it apart a bit more! lol
