Had quite a number of parcels arrive on my desk, 9am Thursday morning! One distributor blanking plug ordered the previous afternoon from MRA-Minis. Superbly quick service from them. A trigger wheel kit from KAD, ordered the previous morning. Very well made as ever from KAD. An EDIS kit kindly sent from The_Matt, who has been a huge help for me setting up the MJ, I keep referencing his guide in the FAQ section too. A side order was the Haynes Eletrical Manual from eBay for less than a tenner posted, just to heighten my knowledge of electrical systems. Shortly after checking through those bits my order from 'Spares turned up too!

Had a good evening then on Thursday, mainly spent finishing off the brake lines. I had printed off a picture of how I had secured the brake lines to show my MOT tester. He confirmed my thoughts that as long as it was secure, and none of the line could chaff on anything it would be fine. Also booked the Minus in for MOT on Tuesday. So Thursday night I finished the brake lines, got them all bled. I'd vacuumed the brake M/C with cling film, so it only needed a bleed of the front calipers and the pedal is pretty solid! Also installed the KAD trigger wheel and crank sensor. Very easy to do, just undo two timing cover bolts and bolt on the crank sensor, then undo the crank pulley bolt, put on the trigger wheel and use the new crank pulley bolt provided. However at this point I was a little disappointed to find that the fan belt very slightly fouls the crank sensor bracket!

Was slightly worried on Thursday as I'd ordered the MJ kit at the same time as everything but it hadn't turned up. However I quickly emailed Chris at Trigger Wheels (from whom I'd ordered the kit as they were the only company to have got back to me/had them in stock), and he assured me it would be with my Friday morning (which it was). I should say at this point the service from Chris was very very good.

Been up since 8.30am this morning, finished about 9.30pm tonight. Ate my dinner at 10.30pm! Am now shattered!

Here's a pic of the KAD crank sensor kit installed:

On Friday I used my lunch break to take a trip up to Rally Design to get my silicon hoses. All the outlets on the radiator and water pump are 28mm, so thats what I bought. Unfortunately they don't sell 28mm connectors, despite stocking all the 28mm hoses! :) So I've been looking around for something to use for connectors. Ended up sacrificing a computer desk leg that was just over 25mm. I've grinded the powder coat off and run a bead of weld around each end. Hopefully it'll last, if only temporary. Spent a couple of hours going round the scrappy this morning to find a expansion tank, ended up getting one from a Metro. Its quite big though, and I don't really have anywhere to plumb it in. I've got a topic in Technical running at the moment to discuss the best course of action.

Spent the rest of today (after relocating the starter solenoid), wiring in the Megajolt. Took me AGES to work out the wiring on the EDIS module, and then a bit longer to work out how to earth the shielded cables! Finally got there though, and after twisting a few wires together I decided to just test the EDIS kit to make sure it would at least work in 'limp home mode'. Tested it for spark and found none. After spending many minutes talking to The Matt on msn I realised I had earthed pin 2 on the EDIS coil and not wired it for power! :P Changed that and spark a plenty! Then wired in the MJ module, and put connectors on all the wires, so its now in there a bit more permanently. Uploaded the 'Aldon Yellow' map from the Megajolt Community website and it fired up first time! Really really pleased. My main aim today was to get the engine running again, so well chuffed with it. Still got plenty to do tomorrow. Big thanks to The Matt and Bounce for all your help today! :genius:

Quick couple of pics of the EDIS install and the current state of the engine bay!

couldn't you move the washer bottle to inside the cab or in the boot?
then you could put an expansion tank in the new space created by moving it?

Good stuff Jammy. How are you sorting the sensor input for your digidash? Magnets on the pot joint or rear hub? I've found that you need the sensor to be pointing absolutely in line with the magnets with only a couple of mm clearance for it to work with any kind of accuracy - its all over the place otherwise.

Yea, I could do that! Will long into it today...

Yea, I was going to mount the sensor on rear backplate, and then araldite the magnet to the drum.

Will do Matt, although I doubt I'll get to play with the map much over the next week.

Like I said on MSN, be careful with another person's map, they all need tailoring to suit your sensor/trigger point relationship. But, if you've got the sensor at 90* before TDC on the pulley, then the default map in the MJ (which I've just been looking at) should be a good start point to be honest. :genius:

Just don't give him too much advance :P

Rad position looks good to me! :)

Yea, the idle advance was 10*, and it went upto about 35* IIRC. I'm hoping it should be ok, because its been converted directly from an Aldon dizzy, but I know what you mean, there could of been an error when converting, etc.

have to say, engine bay looks almost complete

for magnetic pickup i used the rear drum aswell, the magnet i got with acewell was same thread as the drum retaining screw, bonus! so i just put a blob of arildite on the magnet to keep it in place no matter what, and sensor was adildited to another part just at the top, just advanced warning, the back plate is suprisingly tough!

Got LOADS done today, much to Rach's annoyance! Kinda forgot about her, but will make it up to you! :closed:

Unfortunately I couldn't wire in the sensor because the wiring isn't long enough to go through to the back. Might pop into Maplins tomorrow if I can get the afternoon off and try and get an extension lead, if not I'll just have to stick it on the pot joint.

Another problem I had today was when I came round to set up the suspension angles, and also explains why I've had a few problems with the passenger side suspension. The rose joint on the top arm was wound most the way out, so even when the arm was wound right in, the length of the top arm was also going to give me far too much postive camber. To wind the rose joint in meant taking the bolt out. Unfortunately I'd put the bolts in from the back, and the bulkhead was therefore not allowing the bolt to be withdrawn. So I had to spent a good hour dropping the engine and subframe just to turn two bolts around!! Luckily the way I've plumbed in everything meant I only had to undo the subframe bolts and the engine steady.

List of other jobs done today:

  • Remove the remaining bits of old seat belt
  • Double check crank trigger wheel - was one tooth out, now corrected
  • Bodged the rear exhaust mount
  • Try and improve the suspension angles
  • Made up battery clamp and fit
  • Grease and ziptie CV boots
  • Finish bolting in the engine steady
  • Adjust mixture - think its still running a touch rich
  • Fit air filter
  • Fit gear linkage roll pin
  • Made up and fitted lower radiator bracket, then fitted radiator

Still got quite a lot to do. I was annoyed yesterday that I realised Car Builder Solutions is about an hour away from me, and I realised this at 12.30pm, 30 minutes after they'd closed. After browsing their website they stock everything I need to finish the cooling system and a couple of other things.

List of things still to do:
  • Finish wiring to MJ
  • Fit switches to switch panel
  • Re-fit drivers door, haven't got time now to repair them
  • Wire in ETB permanently, get speed sensor cable extensiona and fit speed sensor
  • Bolt in drivers seat
  • Finish the cooling system
  • Sort out some sort of expansion tank
  • Fit choke cable
  • Loc-tite crank pulley bolt
  • Nut and bolt check
