The spokes are going to be sprayed gloss black, same colour as the car.

I miss having black wheels, just makes the car look much meaner on black wheels

Progress!!

Well after a disasterous first attempt at building the engine, see this thread: http://www.theminifo...howtopic=127451

So after some serious headscratching, i've got it all sorted and spent a few hours today starting the build.

All went in nicely, no problems, rotates super smooth etc etc

So going great so far. Might put the cam in tonight or tomorrow, need to order a DTI gauge to set the cam timing too...

Been to minisport again today.

Picked up some more panels...

Got a pair of rear valance closing panels, a door step panel for my mate to take patches from and a boot floor repair panel as thats looking abit worse for ware.

Also picked up a brand new spare wheel and tyre for £30 and a facet electric fuel pump kit.

Going to be starting the major welding and prep work next week so i'll get some pics then...

Carried on with the engine today, got the end plate on, cam in and got the timing gear ready to go.

I realized that the the cam gear doesn't have a timing dot on it?! So i've had to go off the old timing gear and mark where the dot should be with abit of tipex!

They also took alot of work to get them to slide on the cam and crank easily. I had to use sandpaper on the cam and crank tail, as well as inside the sprokets.

I've tested fitted the sprokets, but the cam sproket is a fair but lower than the crank sproket, so i'm going to have to go and get some shims from minisport tomorrow. I'm also going to get my perspex kit for the new doors tomorrow... :)

Went and got my window kit for the streetfigher doors today. Looks good, shouldn't be too hard to fit and still looks like it'll be practical for going through drivethroughs and the like :o

If the cam sporcket is closer to the engine than the crank sprocket then shims will not solve the issue - the shims move the crank sprocket further out, you cannot shim the cam sprocket otherwise it will play havoc with the endfloat.
Are you sure the crank sprocket is sitting hard against the shoulder on the crank?

Yeah i realized this once i'd thought about it abit more. I went to minisport and they said they don't have shims for the cam sproket, and said it'll be fine once everythings all together and tight.

The crank sproket is definatly sitting on the crank right, you can hear it is as you slide it on.

When I check the sprokets with a straight edge, the cam sproket is about 1 or 2mm lower than the crank sproket.

I should also point out, that i have the oil pump just bolted on for now to stop the cam sliding around when I mess with the sprokets.

w00p!

Did the cam timing today. Was pretty easy once i got the hang of it and got it all set up.

I needed it to be at 110 degrees, using the dot to dot method it was at 114. However, i didn't realize how easy the sproket moved once the bolts were slack, so i gave it a 'slight' tap and it moved about 5mm! :D

So my dad, called me heavyhanded and thinking he can do better, i left the adjustments to him. So we measured it another couple of times and his adjustments were making no difference. Turns out he was tapping the black outer part of the wheel! :)

Anyway, finally got it set at 109.5 degrees. So with abit of chain stretch, should be pretty much spot on :)

So, i've got that sorted and i also decided to refit the tensioner, with a new pad. Hopefully it'll run abit quieter.

Yeah i've been going pretty crazy on it, but it still rubs abit. I think its the bit nearest the edge of the cover thats rubbing. I'll have to find a better punch to do that with.

Im going for megajolt on this new engine, so that should be good once its all set :D

Had your car on a rolling road yet?

Bit more progress today. I forgot that when i took the old head nuts off, they pulled the stud of with them. I tryed clamping the stud in a vice but i just couldn't get the nuts off them. So i ordered a new headstud kit from minispares, along with a few other nuts and bolts, new plunger for the pre verto clutch and all new cables for the engine.

So, they came today, so it was time to put the head on. Everything went smoothly, so thats good,

New studs in, and new BK450 gasket. Minisport told me only the latest batch of these were faulty (last batch was about 7 weeks ago, and i bought mine before that) so should be ok with that:

Pressed steel rockers that i bought. You get slightly more valve lift with these as they're 1:27:1, rather than the 1:21:1 ratio of the normal sintered rockers but a hell of alot cheaper than some 1:3:1 ratio roller rockers!

Pretty pleased with how that went, fingers crossed i've not fitted one of the faulty headgaskets!

Next job is to get the gearbox on, which i'll try and do tomorrow...

Not yet mate, had it timed in on friday, the dizzy was sitting at half a degree, we put it at 6, and it now runs sweetly.

Back off the road for a short while, while it has new sills put on and get it through an mot (ran out yesterday).

Feels alot faster than before though, so i am pleased

I have the same ones on mine, although I was under the impression that they were 1.29:1 rather than 1.27:1.
Who told you they were 1.27?

Ben

EDIT: just re read a few things, apparently they are 1.21-1.25:1
