Hi
I plan to purchase a 2000 Cooper sport, and if it hasnt already been waxoyled, I want to have it done. Halfords sell the clrear stuff, and the black stuff, but I have the large clear waxoyl with the pump trigger etc.

To waxoil the underside and arches, is the clear stuff OK to use? Its just that the black Waxoyl undearseal stuff looks horrible!

Thanks

id personally use the clear wherever it will be visible, ie/ where you dont want to be black, and the black wherever it wont be visible.

Yes. The reasone I asked is there is the waxoyl underseal product which is black, and the clear stuff which is for cavities, box sections etc.

The clear is much better as I always think to see the body colour under arches etc is best. Also, I reckon i will do about 4000 miles a year as it will be a weekend summer driver only, and to the odd mini show.

My Mk1 Cooper has the clear waxoil everywhere underneath, not the black underseal one.

But is the Waxoyl clear as durable as the Waxoyl underseal black stuff?

i wouldnt touch the black waxoyl underseal stuff with a bargepole. its horrible stuff, paint it on, it dries then a few years later it lifts off allowing water underneath and rust!

waxoyl once a year, and you should be rust free for ages. i use the aerosol version or the extension probe for the hard to reach bits like under the scuttle panel, inside sills etc. it does wash off after a while, so i do it once a year before winter. same time i check for any new rust etc.

there is a black coloured waxoyl which is the same as the clear stuff, not to be confused with the black waxoyl underseal!

yeah they do a spray can in black as well as the clear, but in either case it will need to be re-applied annually/bi-annually ideally as it isnt bulletproof! i do see what you mean about water getting trapped though, as my coat got stone chipped rather easily and allowed rust to do its stuff ¬__¬

I like the black stuff. I do from my sill joining lip down including the wheel arches.

I think having a black underside looks neater myself, but each to there own.

Thanks guys
I already have the Waxoyl clear stuff in the big pressure can, trigger hose etc. I thinki then I will use it for all of the areas when I get my new Cooper Sport. For My MK1 cooper, thats already waxoyled in clear in 2005, but has done only 1500 miles since it was applied, and is always garaged. But I will be waxoyling it again this year.

As for my future use of Waxoyl, with the clear I can see the bodywork paint once it is applied, and so notjing will be "hidden" as it would be if I used the black stuff.

The clear stuff it is then!!

The clear Waxoyl isn't particularly clear once it's fully dried and it will resemble dried porridge.

The black underbody sealant stuff that contains Waxoyl is actually very good and so long as you inspect it once a year, brush off any that has gone loose and then reapply a fresh coat, then it will do the job very well.

I think there's a fine line between whether you want you're Mini to look original/concourse without actually using it much, or whether you want to use you're Mini often and want it to last.

Anyway I've had that black underbody sealant stuff applied to my wheel arches for many years and their still in pretty good shape both inside and out.

;D

i just dont like the cheap stuff that resembles tar - ive had too many minis with that stuff on and that was all that was holding the mini together on one of them!

have to say the waxoyl underseal is miles better than the cheap stuff, just make sure panels are clean before slapping it on. if i did it, id spray the panel white, then put the black under seal on. that way any stonechips show up easier and of the underseal starts 'lifting off' it adds a little extra protection.

i dont use it because its an absolute bugger to get off when your welding!

I don't use waxoyl - I use Tectyl (valvoline product) .. much better , it is a golden brown colour though - it is marine way and doesn't come off as easy - been using it for years!

I suppose you could probably use Hammerite paint for the wheelarches instead? A smooth colour that is close to the original colour of the car would look good.

But like I said, even clear Waxoyl is going to be visible and will look like dried porridge once it's set so it's probably best to only spray that inside box sections and hidden areas.

Clear go's black anyway once it gets a bit of dirt in it so just buy whatevers on the shelf! How do you find waxoil's own sprayers which do you find best?

I used a small can of Waxoyl today to spray inside my boot lid and the box sections beneath the boot floor etc, because I got busy whilst my fuel tank is out.

Anyway I just heated the can up in a jug of nearly boiling water for a few minutes and it all squirted out a treat with no blockage.

I've got a large tin and full application kit all waiting for when I fully rust proof my Mini, but I've heard that you should add a little white spirit as well as heat it up to get it flowing nicely. Then it's more likely to creep into every single crevice.
