what happens if you put too much oil in the engine as in about a cm over the max mark on the dip stick?

Nothing much, hell most people say fill to the X on Max.
You'll be putting the oil seals under a bit more stress. If it bother you so much then just unscrew the sump plug a little and let some dribble out.

Overfilling oil raises the oil level too high causing the crankshaft to actually run in the oil and froth it up. This can cause oil pressure problems due to the pump trying to suck up bubbles and wotnot. Leading to further problems.

Yep, can lead to seals being rendered useless etc and leaks etc...
just let a little out via the sump plug,... it's messy, but not too bad if you're quick.
also, if it's overfilled quite badly, It can cause sluggishness and choppy running as the Crank Hits the oil and enters it,.. causing it to slow down with the increased resistance.

Have you tried sucking it up the dipstick hole with a length of plastic tube? Works on my bike...
