Lithium grease. Castrol LM is available at Halfords. Duckhams LB-10 is specified for Minis but all lithium grease is much the same.

For wheel bearings use LM grease. Castrol LM is what i use, it is designed for things like wheel bearings and has a high operating temperature. Any other type of grease may lose viscosity as it heats, potentially overheating the bearing soon after.

I assume you are using tapered roller bearings? Anyway, on this bearing try and forece as much as possible into the retaining cage of each roller. Keep pushing it through till you can see no more will get in there.
Also, run a good smear on each of the inner and outer race. However, when the whole bearing is in place you should allow room for expansion.

Remember that bearing are matched, so do not get the races mixed up from how they are packaged.

John
