Etch? = yes
Laquer? = depends, if you just buy a One stage (1k) gloss paint (like the rattle can halfords stuff) then no, you don't have to laquer, if you buy a base coat (this sets Matt finish) then Yes, you will need laquer... this is what gives the shine.
I used Engine enamel on my wheels, set rock hard and cleaned up lovely.
Dont forget guys... There is already a TMF wheel restoration guide with all the info and pics you need. Search is your friend

Yes i would use the 1k gloss paint halfords sell in rattle cans., leave about 10 minutes inbetween coats, 5-6 colour coats should be ample.

coolio
ill get some pics as i go along.
bean, ill trade them for your cosmics
nahh il post all my pics us later.
ill get paint supplies 2moz.
i stripped 1 wheel earlier 2day with nitromors and went over it with a wire wheel on the dremel to get rid of the oxidised alloy. then gave it a quick smooth with fine wet and dry on the dremel also, to get rid of kurbing marks.
now i have got 5 more wheels to strip
ill be back later if i havnt passed out with nitromors fumes.
cya
p.s how ur repairs coming along bean?

glad this came up actually.. because i was about to ask anyway.
im going to be repainting my alleycats...
the white is a massive contrast on the car, and it has brake dust discolouration but fortunatly no dings or been curbed either
just wondered if its easier to have the tire removed from the wheel? or if i should just tape it up?

i used Hammerite smooth black - 3 good coats on each of my steelies - you can put it straight on rust but i grinded is all off and gave it a good key
erm i would suggest doing the whole rim black, then masking off the black areas you want to keep then spraying silver, becuase if you just flat it back again the alloy will just oxidise again and go manky
oh and to matts question - remove the tire because that way you can paint inside the rim, as it can rot from inside too, plus its easier than masking up the tire

Noooooo don't paint the whole thing.
If you look after your wheels with wheel wax etc the alloy will be fine, you do have to look after them but alloy look sos much better than 'silver paint trying to be alloy'
