LOL its no coincidence that an AA van is always parked outside my house!

The RAC and AA offer very similar levels of service at very similar prices doing pretty much exactly the same jobs so my advise would be to pick one of the top two and you cant go wrong

oooh, well, I've got a question for you about the level of cover then

Say I was to take out a breakdown cover for me and the missus, when it says 'elligible car' does it really not include modified ones? because both of my cars are modded. It's just after Bungle raised the point about them not covering modified vehicles, that's all.

As long as the car is taxed, tested and road legal it's covered. Competative racing, rallying etc. seems to be a no no but road legal rallies, test days etc. held on a public road seem to be included.

Cut and pasted from the AA's T&C's

Vehicle specifications
Breakdown Assistance is only available for cars, vans, minibuses or motorcycles which meet the specifications set out below.

Please note that 'car, van, minibus or motorcycle' does not include, among other things, electric pavement vehicles, electrical wheelchairs, any vehicle which cannot lawfully be used on the public highway and/or any non-motorised vehicle.

Maximum Vehicle Weight: 3.5 tonnes (3,500kg) gross vehicle weight

Maximum Vehicle Width: 7ft 6in (2.3m)

Assistance will also be provided for a caravan or trailer which was on tow at the time of the breakdown, provided that it falls within the above limits.

General exclusions from service

service for vehicles broken down as a result of taking part in any 'Motor Sport Event', including, without limitation, racing, rallying, trials or time-trials or auto test. However, for the avoidance of doubt, the AA does not consider 'Concours d'elegance' events, track test days for road-legal vehicles or rallies held exclusively on open public highways where participants are required to comply with the normal rules of the road, to be Motor Sports Events.

I've had AA cover for a few years now and never had cause for complaint, my BF has two landrovers one of which is an off roader so highly modded and i have never been refused, but they do have details of all the households cars.
Saying that, the RAC cover my work as we allow them to promote ther service on site so i have used them loads too (but not on modded cars) and have never had any probs with them either.

I uesd to be with Greenflag through my bank account but since i bought 1969 mini it was no longer covered as it was older than 1982. my previous mini had a copuple of breakdowns and they were ok responding. I am now with RAC and they are perfect. i had a small accident and they couldnt do enough to help and were there within 15 minutes. They kept calling to make sure everybody were ok and to check we had been picked up.

....my cars a kit car and i did not have to pay anything extra. they usually charge more if there is a problem towing the vehicle and they have to use special epuipment to get it on the truck. i wouldnt see why you would have to pay more for a van when its smaller then the average modern car.

i personally recommend RAC but its all personal prefence in the end.

I'm with the AA and can't complain. They got me home from Brighton quicker than I could have driven, and turned up within an hour despite the roads around there being grid-locked.
The bloke at the stand in Brighton (riding a BMW R80) even contemplated doing my clutch at the roadside, now there's a good reason to join if there ever was one!
They get my approval any day!

Looking at The RAC Family deal

think its 5 or 6 people in one household covered, as passengers or drivers in any car

which isnt bad at all if you get stranded in your mates car and he's not covered

and its for the whole family

anyone done this??

My vote goes to the poor AA sod who spent a few good hours replacing someones head gasket at L2B on Madiera drive - the last guy that tried that with my old mayfair gave up as soon as he looked under bonnet!

RAC :P

Never had any problems with them.

Each time they've got to me in under 10 minutes :teehee:

Handy because YOU are covered, not the car.

Oh - and I drive a Fiat, so I've had a fair few dealings with them.

(unfortunately it's been the same chap every time, so its slightly embarrassing!)
