What is a gold seal engine?

I've just brought a 998cc Mini Mayfair 1989 that has a gold seal engine fitted. Am I correct in believing that this is a factory overhaul'd engine and there simply a direct replacement to the original or am I way off the mark? I'm just a little unsure since I've never heard of the term "gold seal" before
I think you are right. My mini had a 998 gold seal engine which was a replacement engine. You should be able to tell by the engine number. Mine started LBB which is a number type given to replacement engines.
If you post up your engine number im sure some one will be able to help, in fact i am sure i saw a topic once which explained what the engine numbers meant.

Anyway, you're quite right, The gold seal and Silver seal engines were Factory Replacement engines built up by Unipart. It's generally accepted that they were built up with a little more care. People who have driven the Unipart engines all seem to agree that they were spot on, the 998 I drove last year was absolutely perfect, and untouched since installation! It also seems the engine, more often than not, had their bores linered,... Liners are reputable for being much more hard wearing than the original bores so this is another plus point!
Every now and then a Unipart engine will pop up on Ebay, usually still In it's crate. Whilst the 998's aren't so sought after,... if you could find an 1100 or 850 Unipart engine still crated up with documents etc it'd be worth a pretty penny!
