Years ago my mates dad lifted a Hillman Hunter engine out with a host hanging from a big stick resting across the top of his chucked-up garage doors. Anyone got any better ideas? :w00t:

when my came out it was with a hoist, but we tried lifting it out and we could actually lift it but it was too difficult to manouvere it over the front slam panel so we gave up and hired a hoist from HSS.

if you can jack the engine up high enough where all it needs to do is lift past the front panel and down you can heave it out with some effort, but i'd rather save my back. It can be done though, as it is possible to lift a complete engine out, but is easier if you remove a few bits like the head as it becomes lighter (funnily enough) then you may be able to

borrow/ hire an engine hoist!!! in the past i have used 3 scaffold poles in an a frame shape with chains and a hoist to lift the engine out... my personal favourite is to undo the subframe bolts and lift the car off of the engine and then separate the engine from the subframe, it doesn't take much longer and you get to check everything out and clean it all up.

I have lifted it out useing a scafold pole tied to the engine the tow of us just lifted the pole and up the engine came while a third helped manuver it. A hoild is probably one of the beter ways if you can get one . I have an RSJ in the garage with a dolly on to which I attach a chain block to hoist the engine out.

i have a garage and the frame is made from railway sleepers, i wrapped some rope round the engine put it round the beam attached to a car and reversed up the drive, effortless but i did give in and brought an engine hoist :w00t:

It's not that expensive to hire a hoist for the day. No point risking your car, engine or your health for the sake of doing things properly!

I kinda like the idea of two blokes heaving on a scaffold pole tied to the engine. Only because it must look hilarious. :w00t:

Brute force and muscle
The way i have done it, before my dad got an engine hoist. Its easy for two strong people to get it out by hand, we only got a hoist because we had to take a V8 engine out a land rover.... bit more weight than a mini.

If you make up some brackets to fit on where the engine steady goes + the thermo take off. Use rope to form a loop to grab onto with a hoist (or strong friends + scafold tubing)

REMEMBER SAFETY FIRST! Don't do anything silly (most of the stuff i do...)

How much work is it to undo all the connections and get the whole front subframe/engine/tranny/etc to repaint the engine bay? How long would it take 2 men the first time around?

Its not that much work to take it out complete Just remember to undo the front shocks because the first time i did it i forgot and i looked very stupid in front of friends. I would say about 1 hour. The longest part would be putting it back in as with everything. No silly remarks plz :w00t:

hire a hoist.....

I did this last year dropping a concrete block on my foot. toe bones cam out the underside of my toe and trough the nail.

the nail had to be removed so that the bones could be poked back in place and the nail was then put back in place and stitched to the flaps of skin on the sides... i had a bacterial infection and a reation to the anti biotics... i haven't worked since.

I've removed engines a number of ways..

with 2 fence posts and a length of polly prop, two people can lift an engine up and out...

I then put a beam in the garage and used a chain hoist

A frames with a chain hoist

Up and over with the shell

but BY FAR the easiest is to get hold of an engine hoist, my son can take one out with a hoist it's that easy ( and he's only 9 )

Yes some times it was but when your young you don't tend to worry so much but I have to agree with biggav be safe hire a hoist I have first hand knowlage of dropping things on my foot and half a ton does not feel very plesant (work related) lucky I only cracked a bone in my foot but I was off work for 3 weeks but if it happened at home and an engine fell on you it could be worse.
