if you can jack the engine up high enough where all it needs to do is lift past the front panel and down you can heave it out with some effort, but i'd rather save my back. It can be done though, as it is possible to lift a complete engine out, but is easier if you remove a few bits like the head as it becomes lighter (funnily enough) then you may be able to

The way i have done it, before my dad got an engine hoist. Its easy for two strong people to get it out by hand, we only got a hoist because we had to take a V8 engine out a land rover.... bit more weight than a mini.
If you make up some brackets to fit on where the engine steady goes + the thermo take off. Use rope to form a loop to grab onto with a hoist (or strong friends + scafold tubing)
REMEMBER SAFETY FIRST! Don't do anything silly (most of the stuff i do...)

How much work is it to undo all the connections and get the whole front subframe/engine/tranny/etc to repaint the engine bay? How long would it take 2 men the first time around?
Its not that much work to take it out complete Just remember to undo the front shocks because the first time i did it i forgot and i looked very stupid in front of friends. I would say about 1 hour. The longest part would be putting it back in as with everything. No silly remarks plz

I did this last year dropping a concrete block on my foot. toe bones cam out the underside of my toe and trough the nail.
the nail had to be removed so that the bones could be poked back in place and the nail was then put back in place and stitched to the flaps of skin on the sides... i had a bacterial infection and a reation to the anti biotics... i haven't worked since.

with 2 fence posts and a length of polly prop, two people can lift an engine up and out...
I then put a beam in the garage and used a chain hoist
A frames with a chain hoist
Up and over with the shell
but BY FAR the easiest is to get hold of an engine hoist, my son can take one out with a hoist it's that easy ( and he's only 9 )

I kinda like the idea of two blokes heaving on a scaffold pole tied to the engine. Only because it must look hilarious.
Yes some times it was but when your young you don't tend to worry so much but I have to agree with biggav be safe hire a hoist I have first hand knowlage of dropping things on my foot and half a ton does not feel very plesant (work related) lucky I only cracked a bone in my foot but I was off work for 3 weeks but if it happened at home and an engine fell on you it could be worse.
