Evening,

A wee question. The engine to gearbox is all studs....normally. But wouldn't bolts and washers do the same job. I mean, can't see the point of buying a load of studs from mini spares when I can get a C**p load of bolts for little money.

Just trying to be cheap is all.

So can it be done or will bad horrible things happen?

try getting bolts in above the diff >_<

the studs are there for a reason not just to *yellow human water* you off.

every engine i've taken apart has had 1/4"unf bolts in all holes except the 2 over the diff.

"The engine to gearbox is all studs....normally. "

Really? not on my '64 1275. There are only two studs in my car's block. The balance are bolts inserted from the bottom up.

Really.....well.....that makes life more confusing.

I've only taken apart one engine and they were all studs with 1 bolt.

blame the previous engine builder....

Gearboxes are connected with bolts with the exception of the two above the diff housing ( as repeatedly said above )

If you need some... just ask !

However if you're on about the transfer case, then that depends on A series or A+... A+ use bolts, A series use studs

Ah, thats good then. I can get a load from my local shop instead of buying overpriced mini spares ones. I know their a damn good shop but stone me the bolts are overpriced.

Not for the A+ transfer case ones you can't. They aren't just any old set screws, they're special shouldered bolts precision machined to hold the case properly and to reduce the chance of them spinning themselves out with vibration. The gearbox bolts need to be HT steel but other than that any will do as long as they are the corect thread and length obviously. Increasing the size to 5/8" is a common mod for strengthening the joint and helping prevent flex in the front of the engine block and box.

Right....so...

From block to gearbox, HT bolts are good.

For transfer case (the thing at the side with the drop gears?) use special bolts.

yes?

One minor correction. The conversion Dan mentioned above is moving up from 1/4 inch to 5/16 inch bolts. 5/8 inch is a wee bit big for just about anything on a Mini.

Oh my god that's funny, I can't believe I put that. What's wrong with 5/8" bolts in the gearcase exactly then? :xxx:

Yup, or the original studs with locktabs as in the A series if that's what you already have to hand. Shouldered bolts are better though.
