A few brief scribblings on making custom sigs. Notes for PS7 as that is what I use but any layer based program (GIMP, Paint Shop Pro, etc) will be similar.

OK. So I do it something like this. Its not the only way or necessarily the best way, but it works for me. Open a new document (File>New.... or Ctrl+N), I usually make it heaps bigger than it needs to be so I have space to work.

Open up the images you want to use. (File>Open....)

If you need to trim the edges or cut part of an image away, now is the time to do it. Select the area you want rid of with the marquee tool or one of the lasso tools and then hit delete. To crop, select the area you want to keep with the same selection tools and go Image>Crop

Now copy and paste your images onto your new document. Select (Ctrl+A or Select>All), copy (Ctrl+C or Edit>Copy) and paste (Ctrl+V or Edit>Paste).

Reposition as required on your new document using the move tool. If you want the pictures to "fade" into each other overlap them slightly. Select the edge of one picture with one of the selection tools and set the "feather" value (up there at the top of the screen) to 3 or 4 pixels. Then select the eraser tool and use a fairly large, soft edged airbrush to erase the edge so the picture below shows through.

Add the username using the text tool

Crop the image to get rid of the excess white areas, we made it heaps bigger remember?!! (Select and then Image>Crop)

Resize the image (Image>Image Size) to no more than 125 pixels high (as per forum guidelines)

Save it and post away!

There are also some excellent Photoshop Tutorials on the Digimods site. A little advanced some of them, but follow a couple through and you will soon get a feel for things.

I am afraid that the whole signature thing gives me the creeps.... shouldn't that info be in your profile, links or something? I mean... when you are scrolling through a thread all you can see is the same image repeated over and over... grrr

Bar humbug to animated avatars too.... you know who you are...

*points around randomly

Its simple enough to turn both of them off in your control panel, problem solved.

Not dumb at all dude. :)

First you need to host the picture online somewhere. Places like www.photobucket.com or www.imageshack.us
Copy the image address to clipboard (or make a note of it).
Go into your Control Panel, there is a link at the top right of every forum page.
Click on "Edit Signature" on the Left side.
Click on the "Add Picture" button (circled in yellow below)
A pop up box will appear, just paste or type your image address into this box and click "OK".
Click "Update My SIgnature" at the bottom of the screen and you're done!

Forum Guidelines

Users are requested to appreciate other users of the site and keep the size of their signatures to a reasonable size. A reasonable size is a maxium height of 125 pixels or 5 lines of text. Signatures may be edited if too large.

I think the fill blurb on what is and isn't acceptable is at the start of this thread somewhere (could be wrong mind, so don't quote me!) but the above is the general gist of it.
