Basically, my mini is such a big project and has been goign very slow, so i bought this mk2 as a runaround, not moding it soon went out the window, and im now turning it into a full on daily beast.

I thought id post up, just to show you that i can do things, and to give you a idea of what to expect when i crack on with my mini in the summer. I dont post on here enough atm, and this is why!

Be prepared BIG post, LOTS of pics.

This is copied and pasted from another project thread, so something may not make sense- if i say things like 'now' or 'today' for example.

Mk 2 Golf 1.6 Driver, manufactured late 86, registered 88, on an F plate.

Purchased this in March 06 , and have done a lot of work on it this over the summer, very nice drive now, and still practical.

Engine + transmission:
New clutch (std)
Rebuilt + decoked head (no valve or flow work)
1.8 GTI digifant Cam
Weber 32/36 DMTL carb upgrade w/ K&N bolt on filter.
New exhaust: 8valve GTI spec (larger downpipe, twin exit back box), manifold back. Also bypassed front box with straight through pipe.
New dizzy cap, rotor arm, plugs and leads.

Out of the factory, produced approximately 75bhp at the flywheel i think. I recently had it set up on a rolling road, and it was achieving 99bhp and 104ft/lbs torque at the fly, 71bhp at the wheels. Still need to source some new jets for the carb though; it’s running a bit rich on the first choke, so fuel economy is still a bit low.

Posted Image

Wheels + Suspension:
Bilstein uprated dampers (non adjustable) and 30mm lowered and 25% uprated springs have been fitted.
This give the car a good stance, and really great road holding without being undrivably low, or causing to much upset to steering geometry.
I have had geometry set up via laser alignment, just to make sure things are running true.

Purchased a nice set of Speedline dished 5 spokes from a C**p yard, bargain at £60 with locking nuts and 2 almost new tyres. Same size as original steels, 14x6. I think this suits the car really nicely and keeps it nimble. Big wheels kill acceleration, steering geo, impair suspension performance, and put more strain on various components like wheel bearings.
Put two new tyres on, Avon ZV3’s and they are amazing, fitted to the rear, and haven’t had them step out yet, even on a really wet day. With the old steelies and cheepy tyres, I could get a fair bit of lift of oversteer on roundabouts, especially if they were damp.
Can’t wait to upgrade the front ones, but there nearly new and I can’t afford it right now.

Brakes:
New Front disks (upgraded to GTI vented)
New pads
New Rear Drums
New Shoes
Full system bleed with dot5.1 – made a massive difference.
Master cylinder was replaced shortly before I purchased the car, along with flexible brake lines. Makes me wonder why the bleed was so bad.
Callipers + drums painted for aesthetic and anti corrosion reasons.

Interior:
Corbeau Carrera reclining bucket on drivers side, soon to be GTi seat on passenger side.
Mountney Leather Steering wheel
16valve clocks, so I now have rev counter + 160mph speedo.
White EL dials.
3x52mm aux gauges in std radio housing- Volts, Vacuum, and Oil Pressure.
Radio Relocated to centre console.
Sony Head unit, + boss line driver, soon to be replaced by Kenwood double din.
JBL GTO 75.4 Amplifier, powering front infinity 6 components in custom door pods, and JBL 4x6s in std rear location.
Mutant 2.100xp amplifier powering JBL 10 sub in custom enclosure.

Std door cards, rear seats and carpets atm. Hopefully will be changing these at some point.

Exterior:
Atlas Grey original paint, lots of scratches and a few rust bubbles, currently covered with slodges of hamerite to try and prevent spreading over winter. Next on to do list. Thinking of respraying Matt Black.
Small Bumpers, keeping it subtle.
Smoked tail lights, front indicators and side indicators.
Uprated wiring loom for headlights, all running off relays. Uprated bulbs.

Think that’s about it! Here's a few piccys!

Ok, this weekend just gone has been spent tinkering with the mini on saturday, and tidying my workshop on sunday ready for the work happening this weekend.

Its quite scary how much stuff, tools and parts, i have accumulated in a year since i gained my workshop.

Tasty goodies to note:

Rear big bumper £5!
Strut braces
Posted Image

All the little bits and bobs are on the shelves and on various boxes. new subframe, wishbones, crossmember have only just arrived so not pictured, new brake set up is in the back of my car.

Will be updating frequently from this weekend onwards as project gets underway. Will hopefully be going home tomoorow night, car parked up and stripped be end of thurday.
Once stripped assess what needs doing rust wise.
While filler is drying, start on sound deadening and vice versa. Aim to have car sound deadened and painted by wednesday/thurday. obviously weather could play a big part in this.
Then its time to fit central locking kit, and make new boot build.
Refit interior/fit new interior.
fit new front subframe ect.
depending on time, paint and fit or just refit exterior trim.

New wheels may be a wek or two late, as im tempted to refurb them while tyres are off as one has some big scratches.

Ok, Car is now all stripped inside. Everything out minus dash and wheel!

Ive had to chuck a fair bit of factory sound deadeneing from the footwells, was so wet it was starting to rot. Leak turned our to be a blocked drain hole in scuttle, with a load of C**p built up behind it. Water built up and dripped through bonnet release cable grommit, down onto back of fusebox !!!!! , and into footwell!

Saturated sound deadening
Posted Image

Had to be careful, alsmost tempted to make the car a stripped out mean machine! But no, that look will be saved for the mini. This needs to be a nice daily driver.
Posted Image

Typical britain, Rain stopped play for a little while, so had to fiddle in the wokshop. put another coat of paint on boot plinth, and sprayed my rear cards. Look much better, but could prob do with another coat.
Posted Image

Posted Image

When it dryed up a bit, i set to work with the first of the sound deadening, the stick on stuff. Roller in hand off we went!
Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

In the crevices
Posted Image

By the time i finished i had 2 layers in the wheel well, 1 on the boot floor, 1 on the arches, 2 on the inside of quater panels, and 1 on the inside of the rear panel.
Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Also got the expanding foam out to fill cavities in the new tailgate, and filled the gap between the two skins behind the rear windows in the quater panels. Im not letting any of my base escape!
Posted Image

The knock test shows a noticeable difference in the panels already, cant wait to get 2 layers in the boot with spectrum paint on top!
Ive used half my stick-on stuff, and need to do the front doors 2 layers, and the floor one layer. hopefully will have enough!

Need to get the car drivable again in the morning, going for a park session with some mates from back home, and picking up my front big-bumper from bournemouth. Chuck 2 seats in (pickign someone up) bolt on window winders and away we go lol! should be fun.

Inside of bumpers lookgin a bit scabby, so wire brushed them and gave them a coat of hammerite.

Filler work on the frotn wing, had a coupel of dents.

Posted Image

Lots of progress to the rear panel:

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Took all my arch trims off, fair bit of rust underneath, as expected. Will jsut brush them down and hamerite, will be covered up again to no point wasting time makign them perfect.

Posted Image

Got bored of sanding, so got my Audi handles and central locking out.

Posted Image

Should fit nicely in there!

Posted Image

Bite the bullet, attackign perfectly good door with a grinder! Scary!

Right, update time again. Has been gogin a bit slow, but had to do more repair work. after grinding back rust on arches, some of it was pretty grim. Will be doign some scrapyard rading and a trip to GSF tomorrow (hopefully there open) to get the last things i need, then it will be full steam ahead.

Right, most of the prep work is now done. all smoothing work complete, both audi handles are in, and the shape at eh back is pretty much there. I need to find some stopper, final sand all filler, prep the rest of the paint and then mask.

Heres some piccys!

Long time no update!

run out of time this easter :) so not taking car back to uni with me just yet, which is a shame, but i may as well do everything in one hit.

doing coursework tonight, and need to tidy up and get glass back in tommorow before i go back to uni, just in case it rains.

It is looking a bit more car like now though. Pictures say more than words:

boot is on, with glass, lock, plinth and spoiler. Was even working. then put the struts on, the the striker catches on the underside of the boot. obviously the shunt has pushed the striker upwards. Will eb fun to fix, dont want to take a hammer to the rear panel for fear of filler falling. taken a hammer to a spare striker, nearly worked. put plates under boot hinges, got it closer. May need to take a hammer to where the latch mounts on the boot lid me thinks.

Glass is in, boot and doors open and close (was having problems with boot due to crash damage, and new handles on doors!) and central locking works. Wonderful!

Check the how to section, will be writing Audi handle and central locking guide.
