Temp gauge rising very quickly when stationary. Soon as I move off it just drops again as quickly as it rose. Is it likely to be the thermostat causing this? or something more like the coolant temp sensor? I recently changed the thermostat after the gauge started reading high (before xmas)

Just went out outside and topped the water up and its leaking out at a seam near the top meaning i cant top the water right up. this my problem? Top hose seemed warm tho....
Also, how do i test if my electric fan works? It has never come on. Some one told me to give it a live feed to something. How do i do that?

the fan is an easy one so i'll start there.
Pull the two wires off the stat at the bottom of the rad and connect them together. Turn the ignition on and the fan should run. If it doesnt it could be the fan, the fuse or the relay. Dont rule out damaged wiring either
If your coolant level is low, yes the temp will rise quicker than normal. I too have found this. If the rad is leaking, you need a new one

if you think the fan dosnt work while the car is running connected up properly try this ;
turn the car on and let it run upto tempreture then rev the car to half revs maybe 4000 4500 the fan should kick in well thats how it works on my brothers spi

Righto ill test the fan at some point. I remember you saying that your fan only ever came on once and that was a seriously hot day so it hasn't really bothered me that ive never seen it come on. I've never ben at the point where its reached the red on the gauge although its been very close. Ive ordered a new rad, i think ive been told that this is a good one. And i got a stat too as a precaution.
One of the rows on my present rad has become dislodged and the welds have split, i only got it two years ago from moss and that seems prettyy shoddy to me....hmmm
