Granted, the POT HOLE OF DOOM is in France (just outside Lille, if I recall), but overall the French roads are a whole lot better than the Belgium roads! If I may be so bold as to make a suggestion (keeping in mind I'm not going this year) it might be better, and the roads are definitely better, if the straight-through crew go north a little way, and across the middle of Belgium through Brussels. The roads don't deteriorate until near Liege - they're straight, smooth and wide most of the way that way. Just watch out for the Brussels Ring Road - that can be a traffic nightmare sometimes.

Straightforward route - north from the port (whichever port, it don't matter) to Oostend, then east to Brussels, then south east to Liege, then the usual way to the Ring.

You will also pass Adenkirke, just over the Belgian border, where cigarettes are almost as cheap as in Germany.

I've got a lot going on this year... a big Open University paper due in Sept, a few other things... so I'll have to pass on the 'Ring. I think I've taught you lot enough about Germany so you can get on without me now!
