can you convert a mini with a remote change gear box with rubber drive shaft couplings to the potjoints from 73 onwards??
if so what do i need (obvisley drive shafts and joints) but what else?? and how do i do it???

I'm fairly sure that the crucifix output coves still use the same 1.25" bush as the pot joint, it's only the hardy-spicers which are a different size, so the covers should be ok... but you will need to change the output shafts in the diff.

You could also search eBay and other sources of NOS parts for a set of QL5000 u-joints. Those replace the original rubber coated joints with one mounted in nylon cups. Of course... they're no longer available new from suppliers. However, once you do get a set of those, you can replace the metal parts with the driveshaft U-joint out of a Triumph TR6 or TR4. That will allow you to continually recondition the QL5000 once you've made the initial outlay to find and purchase them.

just had a look at a pic of the quinton hazells. i think i may already have em fitted to my car, as they look like white nylon rings. the pic of rubber couplings i had a look at were black.
i guess if i have em already i dont need to change.

The QL5000s are certainly OK. If you are/were racing, in the old days there were steel cups available to replace the nylon ones. I have never seen these for sale at current sources for Mini parts.
If the joints you have do wear out, remember that you can buy a complete TR6 or TR4 driveshaft u-joint and use it to rebuild your QL5000s. Press out the old steel bearing cups from the nylon, press the new ones in. It's that simple. TR6 u-joints are also (at least over here) relatively inexpensive.

Thanks very much for the info, it used to be a rally car in the 80s appartley so maybe thats why there there.

I'm running the rubber joints, whats the advantage of the nylon versions?

In general the nylon cups last longer and hold up better with higher horsepower compared to the original rubber coated joints. However, I've been told that the rubber ones are a bit smoother on a street car. I can't image the nylon ones "feel" significantly different than the Hardy-Spicers or Pot Joints.

Well I tried some of those QL5000 that are being sold on Ebay. Had a less than favourable experience when the joints exploded when pulling away from some lights. they had done about 1500 miles. The joints were torqued up to the Haynes spec 11nm.
Looking at the good side that didnt explode, the nylon cups where pulling out of the inner metal joint.
Going back to rubber that had lasted since 2007 until jan.
I'm sure these copies are unto much....
