Anyone proper aquaplaned before???

Obviously I had heard of the phenomenon but never experienced it until Sunday evening when I hit a flood at 50 . After the initial swoosh everything went quiet and the I found myself pointing sideways, how I managed to keep big bird on the road I don’t know, my heart was trying to make its way out of my throat but we survived.

They really don’t like the wet do they………..!!

Only got little 10 inchers - the tread seems fine.

The problem with the wet was the dissy filling with water as well as the foot well driver and pass side.

I'm in the process of adding Marigolds under the bonnet :P

Aquaplaning is definately scary stuff, not having any control of your situation is definately a brown pants moment and of course, you cant always see standing water in time to slow down/prepare for it!

Done it a few times, most impressively about 15 years ago... Driving a Montego, through a large puddle @ 20 mph, and the car literally floated out the other side and re-arranged a telegraph pole, and left a very impressive telegraph pole shaped 18" deep dent in the front of the car, down the inside of the wing. Since then thay have moved the pole to the other side of the road...

Yes indeed - p*ssing with rain, pitch black, after a long sweeping bend. Very brown pants.

Good old big bird held on in the end. At least if I had pranged it they would have found me easily enough being snapdragon yellow, and the stench from my underwear of course :'(

Aquaplaning is really to do with the tread on the tyre, the quality of the the tyre or the size of the wheel. Its the width. Skinny tyres will cut through the water (and thin layers of snow) and provide grip. Big wide wheels will tend to plane over the surface.
