Which wire is getting hot?

I'm a bit ambivalent about making this a sticky as there are a number of variables that can need highlighting: matching the motor to the ring gear; ballasted ignition...

It's a subject that often turns in to a conversation.

For those that have converted to pre engaged and deleted the wing mounted solenoid, where have you taken the main power from to feed the new relay?

old solenoid coil +ve to new relay solenoid coil and seperate fused feed from starter motor solenoid +ve (battery wire) to relay contacts and back down to starter motor solenoid feed

Thanks, I was thinking the same just seemed weird running the wire back up from the starter and back down again.

Using the old solenoid does mean you can extend the battery cable by just moving the old starter cable onto the same post.

I fitted an Insulated Post (originally M8 but now changed to 5/16" UNF) to the inner wing. I have the Main Battery Cable connected to that (which I shortened up a bit), I also pulled back through the loom all the Brown wires that terminate to the Solenoid and put them on the post, then off the top of it, is a new lead to the Starter Motor Solenoid.

While I could have just as easy extended the Main Battery Cable to connect to the Starter Motor Solenoid, I like to have an easily accessible Terminal here so for jump starting, it's an easy access point.

Sorry that is untidy, I was doing a build. While this is in a Moke, I've done similar in Minis too. The White / Red Start Wire I find long enough to comfortably reach the Terminal on the Solenoid.

These type of battery posts are fairly widely available, many of the Autospark Suppliers, 4WD shops, Boat Accessories Suppliers etc have them.

If you untape the harness you will find a couple of thick brown wires. You can splice into one of those, that is how the factory did it on later minis. Have a look though at what they are feeding to make sure you aren't adding too much to them.
