I'm in the process of buying a second hand Mini Clubman which I intend rebuilding. As I live in South Africa, it will be a bit awkward to find certain spares that you fit on your cars. Has anyone ever fitted a Rocam engine which is the engine fitted to the South African Ford Fiesta, Ikon and Focus. They come in 13, 14 and 16cc sizes. Otherwise I'll have to consider a v-tec motor, which I presume is the Honda engine, as we don't have Vauhall cars in South Africa. Any info will be most appreciated in my venture.

yes vtec's are honda engines.

no idea about rocam engines though

Vauxhall are called OPEL in most places outside the UK
I have never heard of rocam engines

just searched it, and aparrently a rocam is a type of zetec engine, but with SOHC.

Don't think we get them in this country..

SOHC zetec. Sounds horrid. How about a daihatsu charade gtti or suzuki swift engine, they are both well documented mini conversions.

This Rocam engine is manufactured in South Africa and exported to the rest of the world.

Thanks for the info bout the v-tec engine. Diahatsu spares are extremely expensive here

we do have opel engines here but I particulary do not like opels having had one fall apart on me

well they are vauxhall... no idea if the modelsa re different though. if youve got penty of honda's then vtecs probably your best option.

Not meaning to drift off the track of the conversation here but bloody hell its good to meet someone else from South Africa.Hoezit.
Well now back to the topic at hand....i suggest going for the V-tec engine as these are more powerfull.Plus it'll be easier as there are already engine subframes for this.You will have to make one from scratch if you want to put the Rocam engine in.
Or you can go the way many here in SA have gone....Golf 1.3 or 1.6 motor.The engine is much easier to maintain as the parts are very cheap.Once again you will have to build your own subframe.
What ever your decision i'm sure you'll make the right one.When your done let me know , would love to check it out.

I don't want to appear ignorant but these v-tec sub frames - where do I obtain one here in South Africa?

dont think anywhere in SA makes them but i dont live there so wouldnt know for sure. you might have to get one imported from a uk or us company.

Well i myself have looked but was unable to find anything decent.Best option to import.
You could also build your own but you gonna pay a truckfull.I know it sucks to live so far from the MINI Mother land.

hey all you SA mini folk!!

vtec is your best bet but you looking at bout R20000 for the conversion...

and the rocam engine is bullet proof, not horrid at all, got one in my lil bantam!!!basically an Ford 8 valve fuel injected engine - no fancy stuff

if you do it all your self, probably a lot cheaper, with good power!!!
