Howdy all.
I have a 1967 Mk1 Australian built Mini Van. Its' license/registration plates are: BMC VAN
I am the third owner and know the full history of the car. The original owner bought it in 1968 upon retirement and hardly drove it. He left it to neigbours of his who are friends of mine. They hardly drove it and sold it to me.
I have had it since 1995, when it had 11,000 miles on it. It now has 32,000 on it and a worn out motor.
So time for a full restoration.
It has a 998 motor, wind up windows (as all aussie built Mk1s did by this stage) floor start, magic wand gear stick and 850 chrome grill.
The paint it Ok, as I re-sprayed it in 2000, and got rid of a little surface rust that it had. But it needs proper/professional paint finishing.
I have an Australian built MK2 (MINI 'K') van for parts with an 1100 engine.
The plan Bore out the 998 block by 20 thou, and re-build it with the 1100 crank.
Use the original 3 syncro box which is in excellent condition.
Have the head ported a little for better flow.
Install a 2 inch exhaust, LCB and twin SUs I already have, as the only mods, with the hope of some morepower... 60 bhp would be good!
Everything else to be totally standard, except for an early (Riley Elf style) walnut dash that I have put away.
Other than the above it needs....
a steering rack, some wiring, bushes, rubber and bearing throughout and TLC. I expect to have to get tyres, brake linings and a new windscreen.
And finally I plan to turn the spare van shell into a trailer. I have seen one where the body was cut off forward of the firewall, then the 'A' pillars shifted back close to the 'B' pillars by removing the doors and foot wells. Then the windscreen and firewall are kept and sit about 10 inches infront of the end of the van tray. That's the plan... but the trailer will wait uyntil the car is finished...
I love this car, have had it for 11 years and will never sell it. in 2001 it was retired from everyday use and I have been slowly collecting parts ever since. Now it time......... I want her back on the road by Christmas 2007....
Cheers Paul R
