i've just returned from the autorport international, chatted with a few folks there about throttle bodies and injection only the important people, dta, jenvy, etc. anyhoo, the gist i got was if it puts in fuel and air at the right rate then it'll work. how well depends on the complexity or adjustability of the carbs interior!

Finished painting the inlets up last night with high temp paint.

Just amassing the bits required for saturdays rolling road

Carbs (rather obviuosly)
Inlets
Airfilter
New throttle cable
Choke cable is okay to reuse
New inlet manifold gasket
New sparkplugs just in case (leads are ok)
Rocker cover gasket (as rocker clearances need checking and not sure of condition of existing gasket)

Camera

Oil and coolant checked

Anything else?

Well good news and bad news following the rolling road!

Fitted carbs turned key and it started :-

Started to do a few runs at differrent loads etc needed to adjust the main jets and blank off the air correction jets, slowly working the way up the rev/load range but there was a misfire. Each time we adjusted something it moved a little further up the rev range.

Then Paul, the operator, said it was cylinder 3 that was misfiring. Fair enough I thought as had a new set of spark plugs with me. Put them in but no better so took nr 3 plug out looked into the cylinder to see a trickle of coolant down the back of the bore :w00t: :genius: :genius: :xxx: Head gasket has gone

Anyway packed up the rolling road equipment, and drove it home to fix and although the head gasket has gone the noise compared to the weber is less and it will pick up quicker and smoother when saying doing 30 in 4th and putting your foot down.

Once head gasket is done It will back on the rolling road.

Will do when I get a decent run in!

Sort of had a feeling something wasn't going to go right when I cross threaded one of the manifold nuts.

Not yet no as while the head is off I'm going to be giving it the once over which has resulted so far in -

that I need new head studs as one is bent (probably caused the gasket to go) :D

the rocker shaft is scrap! :)

the pads on the rockers are suspect, probably due to the shaft being scrap! :o

and I still need to check the valves and guides which I'm doing sat down PRP.

Going to Bingley with cash as I suspect the easist way to sort the rockers is to get some new ones but don't want 1:5 ratio ones really and nobody seems to make standard 1:3 ones any more.

They were the old pressed steel ones which had been strengthened by welding them as per Vizards

Really stuck as to what to get dont think they are salvagable as the pads would need grinding down which I think would remove the hardened surface which would make them useless

and If i go up to 1:5 it will make the cam come in later which I dont want plus they wont fit under the standard steel rocker cover

wouldnt necesdarily make the cam come in later!! what cam are you running? 286 with 1:5's is about as hard on power as its guna get at 2500rpm, definately 3000rpm but its barable under that as long as u have the right dizzy giving the right timing!

but one of the points of the bike carbs was to improve the low down torque which going to 1:5 would be going the wrong way moving the point it which in comes on cam

and the issue of the rocker cover, not major but I really dont like the alloy/MG ones you get

hmm, again it depends on cam choice really, a std cam will give better torque at low revs with 1:5 i was lead to believe because a std cam is so short on lift!
