hi guys, just bought my first car (1991 Mini City) and I was planning on fitting a cherry bomb exhaust to the car... as far as i'm aware these add a really nice groan and popping sound.

Now, does anyone know which type of cherry bomb unit I need to buy, preferably with a nice tail-end. And what else would I need to buy so that I can actually fit it to the exhaust system ?

I will post pics of my car soon, thanks !

Josh.

i wouldnt bother personally.

I think theres a cherry bomb on mine, somehow its been stuck onto the original standard pipe and then a chrome trim added to the exit.

Its coming off for a full RC40 system

RC40 is a tried and tested design, its a 1.75" exhaust system, with various backbox/exits availabe.

The RC40 gives best performance increase when fitted.

A stage 1 kit for a 998cc engine (RC40 exhaust, freelow manifold, inlet manifold, air filter, needle and fitting kit) is around £150. This is said to give 20% increase in power (when rolling road tuned correctly)

You can buy it in various forms from www.minispares.com

**A RC40 back box will not fit a standard exhaust. You will need an adaptor/magic pipe or a full system**

I would spend more time getting to know the car and the engine/speeds it can do.

I loved my last 998cc as i had it tuned and it run great. My current one needs a tune, but its coming out for something a little faster (but i am now 2years older)

Yes, your insurance will probally go up. So factor the cost into it. Plus a rolling road tune session is around £60-100 (optional) but defaintly worth doing if you want to make the stage 1 kit power increases and save some petrol.

Welcome To TMF by the way, enjoy driving your mini.

PS. When increasing engine power etc, it is advised you have the braking power capable to stop the thing efficiently. You will have 8.4" brakes and 12" wheels as standard on a 1991 model (unless its been modified/changed)

All the best.

just save up a bit more and buy a stage 1 kit with a single box RC40 exhaust :D

you will get the noise you want + a bit more power

thanks for the advice !
I think i'll try getting used to the car first as you said, I guess I could temporarily get some sort of exhaust to maybe make it look a bit better + add as nicer sound, as at the moment its just the standard pea-shooter jobby.
Any recomendations ?

Yes this is infact also what i heard, that cherry bombs are illegal. Personally I think they sound arse, and you can get a nice sound from your mini simply by adding a nice new shiny back box.. for cheapness I'd recommend someone like Sportex, or even minisports own aren't toooo bad,..

But the best i've heard come from Maniflow, Playmini, or a proper 1.75" RC40.

I would advise on a full stage 1 Maniflow kit, insurance allowing.

In the mean time, make sure brakes are in perfect working order (buy better discs and pads)

Suspension is in working order: buy better dampers, hi-los and HD Tie Bars as a must.

This means that whilst you might not be able to go faster, at least you will be able to stop and go around corners, and wont affect the insurance.

Straight after that, unless you can afford to do at same time: Headlights not candles, electronic ignition kit from MiniSpares (ignitor kit fits inside the dizzy cap).

Then once your Mini is running sweet and stops, corners, etc get the stage 1, get it rolling road and make the most out of it all.

(just what i would do with my first Mini, and something i wish i was advised to do when i first started out)
