Hi guys,
thanks for all the info and efforts!! tis why i love this forum.
what koss is saying is correct, that basically if the rack is mounted behind the front axles and on the bodyshell (which it is) that it is behind the "crumple zone" it may be exempt to displacement also the other jargon means you must have a padded steering wheel.

like Koss says it is true that the column is designed to move away but if this cant be proved one or a combination of the three things below must be done in order to satisfy sva

1- universal joints (the brakage of the column will fold in a crash instead of coming at you )
2- sliding rods (ooooooooh mmmaaaaatttttrooon!) basically two telescopic rods that slide within each other
3- collapsible column/steering wheel boss (many of the steering wheel manufacturers make these such as omp, sparco etc

in my situation the standard mini column does not fit with the curley dash so i am forced to alter the setup so i am going with options 1 and 3 above.

alburglar i will post some pics soon as i can .

Just a quick update, finally managed to finish my steering column , as i said before the curley dash wouldnt fit with the standard column setup :proud:

First of all i hung the column in place with tiewraps and sat in the car and zipped the tiewraps til i was happy with the position.

Then i made a cardbord template to extend out from the mini's crossmember, bolting to the original column mounting point
then i got some 3mm steel plate and copied it.

The bracket was then bolted in place with angle iron on the other side to spread the load

This is the finished job , i added tubular steel bracing and welded a bracket to locate the bottom of the column.
This should keep the sva man happy , as it now offset with universal joint and collpsable boss :proud:

It looks like the bar end from a mountain bike????

Real neat dash

Could you have moved the gearstick back and ran a shorter cable ??

couldnt move gearstick back because of the handbrake lever.

it is from a mountainbike! going to reduce it in size and fit an anodised blue "stubby" bar end in a vertical position, rather than horizontal.
