Has anyone seen this conversion done? I'm thinking of building up a new engine with the BMW K series head to put in my mini in the near future. I've been reading on specialist-components and morspeed's sites about it, I'm torn between an 8v head or a 16v head. Both are twin cam, and obviously in an ideal world I would get the 16v head, but it is more pricey! Does anyone know of power outputs from fitting the 8 valve head? I've read on morspeed's site that with a standard 16v head, mated to an A-series block, power is around 145 bhp. I'm guessing the 8v would be at around 125 bhp.

morspeed do a kit and i think specialist compnents sell some of the bits needed.
I think on eof the harder things to do is get hold of a BMW head. they are getting very scarce since this mod became popular. look fo rthe head first. either will be good to be honest as i think they are both crossflow arent they.

Oh also are these conversions able to run off the motorbike carbs? I assume you can as I've heard of companies such as bogg brothers fabricating inlet manifolds to run car engines on bike carbs.

well as it is a bike head i would have thought it is very possible

Yeh, I would think it was very possible. I'm hoping that the bike carbs could be used with the mini's distributor.

for something like this i would say to use megajolt so you can get the timing spot on.

Find the head first, as stated above.
Also depends what you class as expensive. For the power your going to get, a few hundred isnt that much!

i was looking into this a few weeks ago, it may be a future project...
but go on turbominis.co.uk and search for "BMW head" or "BMW K" or similar. there are a few people on there who have done the converison. John Knight from specilaist components was of great help to me he is on there under 'johnk'.
if you are serious about doing the conversion soon buy the book from specialist components its very helpful.
as for heads 8v will good you very good torque 16v will produce slightly better power but at higher revs, so for a road car i'd go 8v.
as for carbs it'd be much better for a road car to run throttle bodies and injection with a decent map, with carbs you'd have a rough idle because they'd be set up for high revs for the power.
but im not the best person to tell you about this because i have no experience of the conversion im only telling you what i have learnt from others.
best thing to do is have a search on turbominis and then ask if you can find anything else out...
let me know when you start this project i'd love to see how you get on as its something i may be doing in the future.

$way, thanks for that, I'll have a good look on turbominis. It's looking like a very favourable poject. Hopefully I can start collecting parts soon, bank balance allowing lol.
