its the accelerate pump which draws fuel in with the pumping. when i was having trouble starting mine i put some carb cleaner down the throat :) flamable but it did set fire to the weber box when it backfired through the carb

the longer manifold, what they do is allow time for fuel mix. also induction length heavily changes torque characteristics, the longer the manifold the higher up the rev range its going to be. straighter airflow and all that jazz, calculated from the centre of the valve to the centre point of the belmouth/trumped/rampipe

good goin dan, not long if you come back for weekends

'lo

was gonna keep this quiet till the car passes its MOT, but i'm bored andwaitin to go home tomorrow to finish the car....

Last weekend i went home and it was a shambles to say the least. The plan was to get the car finished on the weekend then RR'd and Mot'd on Monday. Things went tits up from the start.
-The new 'leccy ignition i bought didnt fit because the lobe things have been machined of my dizzy shaft, thats no so much a problem as the old one still fits, it just looks a bit messy.
-Then the speedo cable i got was too short, as mine's bout an inch futher forward than normal...in the end i bodged the screw thread fitment onto the end of a longer speedo cable.
-The brakes just wouldnt bleed, then i snapped the nipples.
-And the engine refused to idle under 3000rpm and i cant even dip the clutch without it stalling.

In the end i had to cancel the MOT and RR and re-book it for this week. So nothin exciting :P

This weekend thers not so much to do, just sort the brakes out, and tidy up a few things really. The RR guy, Malcom, has said he can pick the car up on a trailer Monday morning, so i wont have the headache of trying to set up that stupid weber either.

Cant wait till monday now :D, but at the same time bit nervous about driving it for the first time with the new powerplant :D

I havnt fiddled with the jets.. they're exactly the same as when i got it.

I stand by what i said, webers are a waste of time unless absolutely necessary, and them webers that come off fords, the DCD's or whatever.. are appalling!

SU's all the way!

I agree, for anything other than a full out race engine (which I see as quite pointless on the road anyway), DCOE Webers are a PITA and not worth it IMO.

I thought it was the IDAs that came off the Fords?

Some one feel free to correct me, my weber knowlage is very limmited, but i think it goes like this...

IDA - what the drag boys love, fast carl has them on his twin engine beasty i think and vizard loved them too

Posted Image

IDF - think there used mostly on boxer style engines?

Posted Image

32/36 DGV - soz, not the DCD. The DGV's where used on old escorts and the like and for some unknown reason they're a popular 'upgrade' for minis. They're an 'economy' carb apparently, they've got all the complicated features of a DCOE, without the performance enhancing element. My mate, Craig had one on his 1380, it kept icing up, the jets too are harder and more expensive to get hold of. The rolling road guy said they're a waste of time, so did calver in one of his articles.

You pretty much got it in one dan. IDA's are loved by drag racers, but hill climbers choose to use them too. but then asying that Hillclimbers use DCOE's, IDA's or IDF's.

and i THINK the DGV or DCD's were also found on the first fiesta's too.

The DCD's were found on most fords. Think Volvo used them too.

IMHO, if they were that bad, how come Ford and Vovlo and other suck-like makers used them?
I've just agreed to buy a 28/36DCD, I got it purely so I can have it sticking out of the bonnet.

Fifi is running a DCD on his engine too, making around the 60bhp mark.
I guess it all depends what u want really...

DCD's are progressive choke, accelerate a certain amount the butterfly in one barrle opens then floor it both open to allow fuel in, we had them on the lo-cost at college, was a wee bit pants really not what you want for a 'race' engine
