Afternoon all, I am in the middle of rebuilding a 1380 so will have a few questions which i will put in this thread instead of making separate threads for. All is going well, whole engine started off fully built this morning, it is now in a million pieces but i cant remove this one nut. It is the 33mm nut attatched to the crankshaft end, holding a fan belt pulley in position. How can i stop the engine turning when trying to remove this bolt? Thanks

It's a tricky one. Is the transfer case and flywheel still fitted?

flywheel and case are still fitted, just undid the transfer case bolts but its still in position because that large nut needs to be removed so that the transfer case can be completely removed

Well, the crankshaft pulley on the fanbelt (front) end of the engine, is not too bad to undo.

You can get a proper tool for locking the flywhee/crank in place to undo them, but I will assume you don't have that. Take a big pry bar/screwdriver and place it in the hole where the starter motor was fitted. You can use it to lock onto the starter ring gear on the flywheel. If the engine is out of the vehicle and empty of oil, it may be easier to put the engine on its side (starter/dizzy side facing upwards).

Now that you have the flywheel locked in place, you can undo the crank bolts. You need to be careful as they are tight and you also need to make sure that your prybar/screwdriver doesn't fly out of the ring gear! Get a nice big breaker bar (1/2" drive minimum) and give the bolts a slow, steady turn. Don't yank at them or the flwheel may not remain locked in place.

It's not pretty, but it's a tried and tested method.

Oh, and pop a few bolts back into the transfer case, just incase it decides to turn or move at all.

PS.. it's 1.5/16" not 33mm :D

Ohh, and maybe easier to leave where is, amd split the box off, then you can lock the crank with a suitbly sized piece of material (I find the handle of my hammer does nicely)

Just lock the engine with a large screwdriver into the flywheel in the starter motor hole ,should do the trick and call a friend to help lol.

New situation - i hadn't anticipated splitting the gearbox from the engine but now i am. I would like to place an order for parts today so will there be anything else besides the locktabs and engine/gearbox gasket that i will need to buy for reassembly?

Don't suppose anyone in Reading has a flywheel puller and a socket to undo the flywheel retaining bolt today? I can get hold of them, but tomorrow.
