Matt, with regards to your manifold, were you not going to shape the tube ends (that are welded to the flange) to the shape of the inlet ports on the head/flange.

No, I'm not, but Mr Tigman is going to. I had a go at flattening out the runners that are in those pics, to make the ends more oval and closer to the shape of the ports. But, Mr Tigman is going to be able to do a proper job of it

ah right. I had a go at this today, turned out i bought the wrong size pipe :D Im thinking of maybe using silicon hose to go over part of the original manifold, into my custom job. Not sure if the silicon hose would take to the oval shape though.

I dunno to be honest, it'd just fit to the shape of whatever it's wrapped around.

I'm only using hoses on mine (well, car rubbers) to hold it in place. The manifold runners will have a little lip in them for the carbs to sit neatly inside.

I was going to say you could make a small former out of MDF or something like that to shape the ends of the pipes into the ovals but if Mr. TIG is doing it for you then thats even better.

But, I still need to get a gear change unit (lever and rods), mod them so they fit nicely and then set them all up. I'm hoping to get away with a small hole in the bulkhead, rather than the usual big box that people cut out. We'll see though, I believe I can do it if I shorten/modify the linkage on the 'box, so I'm going to do some fettling with that today too.

Matt,

Take a look at this thread on 16vminiclub for details of linkage mods. It looks like this is being done on a big-block but the gearchange mechanism looks to be near enough identical to the small-block ones.

Hope it helps,

JR

what i did is just weld in the box (you cant notice its in, dont take up alot of room). Then chop the gear linkage tube in a straight section, put the gear lever in position, cut the section of tube out that overlaps so you have the correct length, seam weld around the tube, then bolt on the lifting plate that sits on the tunnel, and weld that to the tunnel. Then do the normal set up procedure.

Aaah, okies.

Cheers for that Al. Will have a fettle once the engine's in I think. I read on 16v that some geezer had managed without fitting the box in, so I was going to try and avoid it if I could.

Whats your estimated time of completing the project Matt?

What subframe are you using now that you are sticking with doing the C16XE conversion?

Well, I'm hoping to get if finished over the Christmas break! :-

Nah, as long as it's done and all 'settled in' before ring time, I'll be more than happy. Realistically, the majority of the real purchasing has been done now. So it's jsut a case of banging it all together! :P
Should be ready by Easter I'd hope, but we'll see. My timeline is a very organic thing, it keeps growing all the time!

Update:

I've bought more parts!

I now have a GRP front end (removable bonnet type),
Corsa gear lever and linkage,
A BIG sheet of 5083 aluminium to make a fuel tank, a dash and general brackets and stuff from,
A head bolt set for the engine rebuild,
And, some general toolage for the garage! :P

I've spent a bit of time on her again today, but intend to have a good day in the garage tomorrow. Hoping to get the frame completed tomorrow, but we'll see.

And then it's bodywork sorting time

Fair play to you sir ;D. I'm definitly not going to be one for commenting on lack of Mini work! I've done nothing for ages, except collect bits and bobs.
