Matt, I'm doing similar with my front (release mechanism I mean).

I want all my fixings to be invisible and I want to be able to "pop" the front from inside the car. I've been looking at using a pair of door catches off our good friend, the Mini. I was thinking it'd be good this way because not only will you be able to pop the front from inside the car but they have a locking mechanism in them too so you're much less likely to pop the front by accident while hurtling about town.

Let me know what you think, I'd appreciate it if we could discuss each others findings so we could both end up with a much better result :dontgetit:.

to be honest I was just going to use bonnet catches from a scrapyard off anything that seems about the right size, but I like yer way of thinking! :dontgetit:

Well I was thinking, I want it so that I can have gas struts on either side so when I pop the front form inside the car, it opens. But when thinking about that I felt there was too much risk of it opening by accident while driving, which could be lethal. So I wanted some security, at first I thought of making it like a proper bonnet, you pop and then release a catch and open away, but with the Mini latches it'd be so much more streamline. Definitly worth some deeper investigation I think.

I had a play with a catch off of it's door, once it's engaged, it's very very firm, I was worried that it'd have a bit of slop in it which might not have mattered to a door being pressed against a rubber seal but would to a front end, but it all seems like it'd be ok. Just a case of finding a good way of mounting it all in the right place.

I think we'd need a pair of bonnet pop cables operated from one handle to act as the opening the catch, these would be pulled back by the spring in the catch. Then we'd need a pair of cables that are of a similar style to the heater cable, these can be pushed and pulled and will stay where they are left, these would act as the lock/unlock method.

All these for a bit of added cool eh? Haha.

Sounds like you to are both lucky with your prices then lol

£200.13 + 0 = £200.13 lol only joking

Iv got lucky with my insurace on the minus, i called round some kit car speciallists and they said as its a kit car i can modify it however it want and the price wont change, as officially there is no standard lol. The only thing they wanted to know about was the engine and at 19 they would incure me with what ever mos i wanted to do with the supercharge 1275 for £321 :)

Haha! I remember that! :P

Oh Matt, never seen this before, but it seems this is Allspeed's new website! http://www.allspeede...g.com/index.htm

Have you checked things like tyre/wheel clearance with those too 'brace' bars? Also, how are you bending your metal? I bet you're just using good ol' fashioned brute strength, ya hunk! :D

Looking superb though, so far in front of what I ever got done on my frame already! :D

Take box section, place over knee, heat metal to 200 degrees, apply 50kg of brute force either side of the bend :D

Nah, it's slotted in several places, bent and then rewelded. I'm going to weld a cap on each side of it to put some structure back into the sides.

As for wheel/tyre clearance, not yet, but the brace bars aren't that much further outboard than standard inner wings are (in their current position). Before I weld them in place they will be measured for clearance with hubs fitted (no cones so suspension if fully compressed) and then wheels on full lock each way :trooper:

to be honest though, it's a pretty similar design to the Allspeed etc. type frames. I was thinking of triangulating them a different way, but ended up changing the general style of it to be more in line with other makes of frame.
