Well this is what some on 16vminiclub has said about it.

the grounding is an issue alot of peole havnt noticed because they mount there coils with proepr brackets that use all 4 holes and not with cableties like i did. as you look at the coil pack you will see the 4 mounting holes, the 2 on the left go through the ferrous core of the coil on the left. the 2 on the right go throught the core of the coil on the right. I found if even jsut one of these wasnt grounded i suffered really bad reset's and missfires under full throttle

The other thing that can case problems is the VR sensor wired the wrong way round, but i guess you've tried that.

Cheers for the heads up Ed. I'd immediately thought f coil grounding, so I fitted a looped terminal from the mounting hole of each coil direct to a good earth point. Then I tested this earth with a multi-meter to make sure that all was well. I then saw a thread on the autosportlabs site about grounding coils and it says there that it's not necessary. But to be honest, I am going to leave the loop terminals there anyway.

As for the VR sensor, I haven't tried it yet, but after posting up a question on the ASL site I have been told the same thing. I made the bad assumption that the SEN8D sensor had the same polarity as the SEN8T sensot that the EDIS kit originally came with. I am going to try switching those wires around tonight. ;D

I'll keep you all posted and I'm also going to add a note into my Megajolt write up thingy as some other people using the SC or KAD kit will have the same problem (if it is the two wires needing switching that's causing it). Both kits (and apparently the Weber kit too) use the SEN8D sensor IIRC.

And no Matt, I didn't go round to mum's last night. I'll try switching the two wires from the VR pickup, then I need to go round to mum's place anyway, she needs her tappets adjusting, so whilst I'm doing that I can test the coilpack if I need to.

Today should be the day. I went to get a new battery, but it's an 072 type and the cheapest I could find was £70!!! :)

I've got a spare EDIS module and plug with wires, I could send that to you, no problem organising some parts to sned out for you at all Matt!

I did a reccy in the local scrapyard at the weekend. They had at least 5 Fiestas that had the EDIS units on them, but the engines with the coilpacks mounted to them had gone out of all but one of them IIRC. I might go get the EDIS units that are there one night this week. There were also 3 or 4 Escorts there, which used the same EDIS system. I might go and have a session there and see what price they can do for me on a load of them. Problem is, if they see that I want like 10 EDIS modules and 10 coilpacks, they're going to realise that I want them to sell on, so they'll realise that they're actually worth a bit. I paid a tenner for the ignition module the other day, that was with the multiplug and a length of harness.

So was the problem just knackered coils or something else?

Well, the main problem (causing me to have no spark at all) was that the connections on the EDIS module pins were corroded, the ones that drive the coil pack (pins 10 and 12) weren't contacting properly. I thought they were OK, as I was getting an earth at the bottom of the two wires when the ignition was tured on, but I wasn't cranking the engine. But if I wiggled the plug/module the connection broke down. Bit of plugging/unplugging and some magical spray got the connections working OK. But, the coil is only firing on side B (cylinders 2/3) so that's the other problem.

Really, it was a combination of two problems, the first being that when I was testing for a spark, I was trying the lead of cylinder 4 with a plug in it (but I now know that coil A is the duff side). Plus, there was the problem that the connecting pins were corroded.

Anyway, gonna pick up a new coil today, unless they're ridiculously expensive.

Funny thing is, I remember a few problems from years ago with the connections on these Ford igntion modules getting all corroded and losing contact, it was a common problem. Gonna get some decent leccy contact grease from work today and cover my plug in it! :P

Didn't get it running, because of the broken down coil A, but I'm soo happy that my wiring was infact OK and that the problem was with something else! :P

Seeing those likkle blue sparks last night almost brought a tear to my eye!

Well, I'm gonna pop to me local motor factors at lunch time and ask them there. I might try the Ford motorparts place as they are often a load cheaper than everywhere else anyways.

I'll post up a price from both!

My money's actually on Ford being cheaper! :P Problem is, I need to know which model of Ford it's from. I'm 99% certain it's the same on most of the Zetec Fiestas, like a '96 should do it. I'll have a scan on the web to double check.

Now then-
New coil and battery ready to go on tonight! :P :P

The coil I asked for was '96 1.25l Fiesta Zetec, it was £36 from my local motor factors! But, from Furrows Ford (the local dealer) it was £84. Funny thing is that the motor factors rent a unit off Furrows and is in fact in the same building as them!!
