Update:
Took Friday off with the intention of doing a load of work, but ended up having to sort the Peugeot out for it's MOT!

Anyway, that took up most of Friday, so I had chance to do a bit on the mini yesterday and also today.
Yesterday was a major tidy up in the garage and also I painted some more of the engine ancillaries, also started to tidy up some of the wiring in the car.
Today has been all about head! I drifted the old valve guides out yesterday with a custom drift (a roughly ground one, but it will be staying in my tool box, as it did the job).
Today I have been attacking the ports with a die-grinder for a few hours. I have removed the valve-guide bosses as far as I dare. I have blended any direction changes and ensured smooth transitions between them all and ensured good symmetry in the ports. I have also taken some measurements to ensure all bosses have had the same amount of metal removed (or at least very similar).
To be honest, it's very satisfying, but I did it all with a good book (Peter Burgess) in hand and used his measurements of how much metal to take off and where to take it from. I'd already ground out the ports to the gasket lines (roughly), but I took em all the way today! They just need a finish off with some emery paper.
I am going to take the head to work tomorrow and finish off the port work, then at lunch time I hope to press the new manganese bronze guides in place. I am planning to make a little 'stop' that will sit around the guide and won't let me push them past the required height.
So, once the guides are in, I guess it can go for the valve seat work, then it will be back to me to lap the valves back in and put it all back together. It should be a pretty high-flowing head, but it's all just an experiment as it was s freeby!
It'll have 35.7mm inlet valves (tripple collet) and 29.5mm exhaust valves (again tripple collet), double valve springs and 1.5:1 ratio roller rockers and will also have some wild porting after today!
I think I might send it off to someone with a flowbench when it's finished though, just to ensure that all of the ports are flowing the same (ish) amount.
I am bushed now though, it's tea time!
