Can someone tell me whether this is an original part of the car or a later addition? I've had a look on Somerford's schematics and online and I can't seem to find anything,

It looks like a positive cable junction box, has A878 on it and is located on the left inner wing.

Has the car got a wing mounted solenoid? Looks like all the wires that would normally be attached to the solenoid

Not that I know of. It used to have a 998cc auto and now has a 1275cc Metro engine - I wonder if they just kept the junction box after transplant? Just checked and it's connected to the starter motor solenoid.

That will have been done when the engine was changed from an inertia  starter to one with a pre engage starter.

As Nick said most likely an inertia to pre engaged starter conversion  . Does it contain a fuse for the brown circuits?. Looks like a decent job, keep it.

I have one in my rally car - they're quite a uesful way to give a high current 12V take off point.
