Right, I don't know how I ended up in this position but I have!
I have four rod change casings, all stripped, cleaned and ready for use/storage but one problem......I don't know which diff case goes with which case 😳
A measure up with the "very nears" shows they are all much of a muchness as regards measurements.
Is the bore for the gear selector rod a line boring also or are the cases and diff covers bored separately?
This is my next swap around to try and find the best fitting diff covers.
If there's any other way of sorting this please let me know as this is now holding up the diff and case LSD relieving.

Yes, as said I measured up with those and everything was very much the same across the cases.

They are all machined with the case.

first thing I would do is look for any stamping. Match them

if not then fit the studs and push the housings on. This should how which are defiantly wrong. There should be no step where the diff bearings site.

There are several things to check;-

  • Are there dowels fitted ? If not, fit them. Be sure they are snug on the Cap side.
  • Fit the Cap and Torque it down, just the 4 x 3/8 bolts / Studs will be fine.
  • Check the Bearing Tunnels first by feel, then by measuring.
  • Check the bore for the Selector, I first do these visually, then try it with a spool, it should slip nicely right through. Yes, I know when assembled, this doesn't happen, but it will test for the seal / anti-leak bush alignment.
  • Check the faces for the side covers that they don't have a step in them.

I only went through this yesterday.

Right, I think I have sorted it after much swapping.
A note to anyone in this position.
It looks like the big giveaway is the chamfer in the diff bearing outer where the side cover bolts on.
These are a random chamfer by the looks of it as all mine were different so pretty easy to match.
Even when all other faces mated well the chamfers didn't 👍

Just noticed another irrefutable way of matching things up as I was marking up the inner bearing bores so they don't get mixed up again.
The "pseudo" spinning of the outer diff bearing race marks in the bores (how do those happen?) match up with case and diff housing like a finger print 👍

It’s a bit late for you, but I have few casings and use number punch’s to put matching numbers on removable parts (mostly just the main and diff casing), saves this problem when they’ve been off for blasting!

So you have 4 gearbox cases then, some for storage?

Yes shooter,
Just gone through them and loosely fitted diff covers and output flange covers.
All been fully stripped and cleaned and now cling filmed for storage.
All good bar one with a stripped sump plug.
Keeping one out for my build which should hopefully start next week.
